Reflection / Pangwakas Technology is constantly growing and changing our ways of living. It
makes life easier at times, and more interesting too. When one
would think of art in the past, usually computers and technology did
not come to mind. Now because of modern technology, the digital
age is uncovering vast ways to create amazing works of art through
computer tools and software. Art is now digitally created and can
appear unbelievable to the modern eye.

Performance Standard:
Create a technology-based artwork (video clips, and printed media such as posters, menus, brochures
etc.) relating to a selected topic from the different learning area using available technologies, e.g. food
and fashion.

Learning competency:
The learner:

2. identify the artworks produced by technology from other countries and adaptation by
Philippine arts. A10EL-IIa-2

the rest of the design elements.
• Harmony/Unity, Variety - It is the wholeness or completeness of a picture.

T echnology-based art is essentially computer-generated and/or manipulated. Through the
centuries, visual artists used actual brushes and palettes, and a whole array of paints, inks, and natural
pigments applied to paper, canvas, fabric, stucco walls, and ceilings. Today's computer artists employ the
ever-expanding powers of image manipulation programs and applications to create their works which can
appear in an entire range of media whether as a physical output or a virtual experience. Computer/Digital
Arts Origin and Early Stages computer art or digital art first came on the scene in the early 1960s.
Understandably, this was due to the technology that was constantly developing and that became available
at that time.

Origin of Early Stages

Computer art or digital art first came on the scene in the early 1960’s. Understandably, this was
due to the technology that was constantly developing and that because available at the time. Thus, the
early experiments were not necessary artists, but engineers and scientists who had access to and
experience with the hardware needed. It was they who began to recognize the potential of artistic
expression through the application and mathematical principles.

8
Also understandable was the initial reaction of the public to computer-generated art. There were
questions as to whether it was a “true art” since

• Computer/Digital Arts – make use of electronic and mechanical devices, rether than the artists
own hand, to produce the desired images and effects. Thus, these are definitely a technology-
based art form.
• Mobile Phone Art/Computer-generated Images
✓ Mobile Phone Art – is a form of modern art that emerged due to the available technology
on mobile phones with built-in camera that could capture and store images.
You are probably already familiar with the following image manipulation programs and
applications that run on today’s android devices:

o Pixlr - a powerful, free online image editor

o Pic Collage - allows you to make collages incorporating photos, stickers, text, and
frames.
o Photo Grid - a downloadable application for android phones that allows you to make
collages out of images from your photo gallery.
o Doodle Booth - an iPad application (with a free downloadable version) that enables
you to doodle on your images using available stickers.
o Photo Booth - an application for taking photos and videos using an iPad or iPad mini
(a version for the iPhone, called Simple Booth, is also available)
o Magic Mirror Booth - an iPhone application that allows you to take amusing, distorted
images, simulating camera effects.
o Pic Monkey - a free online photo editing tool that provides filters, frames, text, and
effects to manipulate your images.
o Flipagram - a downloadable application that allows you to bring your photos to life in
short videos set to music of your choice.
o Picsart - a free photo editor and drawing application, as well as a social network for
you to share your art with others.
o Snapseed - a photo application that enables you to enhance, transform, and share
your photos; a free downloadable version for android phones is available.
o Instagram - a fast and fun way to share images with others; snap a photo, choose
from among the available filters, and share via Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, and more.
✓ Computer Generated Images – are those that created from scratch using drawing or
illustration software on desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.

These enable you perform virtually all of the tasks all of the tasks that a program
like illustrator perform but, almost literally, in the palm of your hand.
Among such programs are:

o Gimp (GNU - Image o Draw Plus o Karbon

Manipulation Programs) o Pencil o Adobe
o Paint. Net o Picasa Photoshop
o Inkscape o Paint Star Express
o Xara Extreme o Smooth Draw o Corel Paint shop
o Artweaver o Spray Pro X5

9
Using any of the application installed in your available device(s), experiment with
different effects and features to modify your saved image or illustration. You ma try some of the
following effects, as well as others offered by the application(s) you are using:

o Resize o Adjust brightness o Apply a texture

o Crop o Adjust sharpness o Superimpose text, trying diff. fonts
o Skew/warp o Change colors o Apply frames, borders, banner
o Rotate o Gray scale o Edit out an element that you do not want
o flip o Sepia tone o Add an element that is not in the original

• Digital Photography - is a technology-based art the evolved from the earlier type of photography
that made us of light on light -sensitive film as manipulated by a user of a camera.
Two Basic Type of Digital Photography are:
✓ Point and Shoot – means that the camera pre-sets the needed elements so that the user can
literally just click away.
✓ Digital Single-lens Reflex (DLSR) – enables the photographer to still make his/her own
judgement on how to set the device’s features to achieve the desired image results.

• Video games, digital painting, and video imaging are advanced applications of the digital
technology available today for a wide range of purposes.
✓ Video games – an electronic game played by means of images or a video screen and often
emphasizing fast action.
✓ Digital painting – is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques (such as
watercolor, oils, impasto, etc.) are applied by means of a computer, a digitizing tablets and
stylus, and software.
✓ Video Imaging –The primary function of video is to produce an electrical signal by scanning
an optical image of a dynamic scene, then transmitting a faithful reproduction of the
information in real time to a receiver housed in a remote location for viewing or recording of
the original event.
