The document outlines a network lab assignment focused on establishing serial port connections between routers using Cisco Packet Tracer. It details the steps for configuring both static and DHCP IP addresses for routers and PCs, including the necessary components and connection methods. Additionally, it includes instructions for securing console access with a password.

NETWORK LAB ASSIGNMENT (SERIAL PORT CONNECTION ROUTERS)

V1 – V2

Instructor:
Rawah Mahdi
What is serial port connection in networking?
A serial port is an asynchronous communication
interface that enables a serial device to be
connected to a computer. In the early days of
personal computers, serial connections were the
primary method used to attach peripheral devices
to the machine.

Cisco Packet Tracer (used).

Component to achieve the task:

1. Two routers
2. Two switches
3. Assume each switch hold two different PCs
4. Copper straight-through
5. Serial DTE
6. Two PCs for console
7. Console wire
How task has been achieved (V1 -serial port connection with static):
Step 1. Get all component that we need (routers:
1841, switches: 2960-24TT, six PCs: PC-PT).

Then connect all components together. Use (CST wire for

connecting pc with switches and switches with routers, use
console wire to connect two pc to routers *Do not forget
you should click on RS 232 on pc and console on router
when you make connection between router and console
pc).
Then give IP address for each PC (*only pc that
connected with switches).
Then give each switch an IP address by CLI in
console pc Terminal.

* Do not forget I used (fastEthernet 0/0) to

switch on router. And do the same for both
switches and change the IP address for
example (ip address 192.168.2.1
255.255.255.0) for the second one.

Now our connection between pc and switches is done.

Step 2. Modify your router (1841):
First turn off your router and use WIC – 2T
and put it on a serial section and then put
the router back on.
Then use Serial DTE wire to connect between
both routers and use one of serial ports.

After you connected your wire give each port an

IP address:

Go to CLI and write set of instructions for set an

IP

Do same procedure for both routers

(*Change the IP address for example:
10.0.0.2 255.0.0.0).

Then add network to each router:

*Do the same procedure without any changes in

both routers.

Importantly I used those three IP addresses

that’s why added them to network section.
Now we are done with routers.
Now our connection is done. It must work perfectly:
V2 - Serial port connection with DHCP:
Why do we use DHCP? Because it

gives auto IP numbers to us. We

need same components.

Step 1. Bring all components:

Connect all of them as mentioned it before:

And add WIC – 2T again to each router but
before adding do not forget to firstly turn off
the router then add it after that turn on back
again to work probably.

Then complete your connection between both

routers:
Step 2. Now we will use DHCP for one of the routers:
First, we will

complete the static

router: By adding

the older procedure

into CLI:
After we are done with static router, we will start
to configure the DHCP router:

*We won't add any IP addresses into our

PCs, it will get added automatically. We

will add IP address to our fastEthernet

0/0:

We will give an address for our router:

Then we will add DHCP code for our router:

Go to IP Address section in both PCs that

connected with DHCP router and Choose

DHCP check button:

Now our DHCP router is done.

We can test it by real-time send a message or simulation or ping
By real-time:

By ping:

Now all the procedure is done.

If we want to secure our console:
Firstly, we will click on our console PC then click on
terminal and we will write down a set of instructions.
Example:

Now our console is secured by a password which is (Alfred).

But if someone displayed my previous code it will be shown:

If we want to hide our password, we will use:

Now the password is hidden (*It show a number by default)

Now if we want to login into console again it will say
enter your password And the password is hidden (not
displaying on screen):
Type your password

It will login.

Now all procedures done:

1. Serial port connection between two routers with
static IP address.
2. Serial port connection between two routers with
one router is static IP address and other is DHCP IP
address.
3. Set password on user.
