MOBILE DEVICES

WHAT IS A MOBILE DEVICES?

A Mobile device is a small handheld and


extremely portable computing device having a
display screen with touch input or miniature
keyboard.

They can quickly connect to internet through


wireless communication interface and are used for
a variety of communication and other data services.
TYPES OF MOBILE DEVICES:
Personal Digital Assistant, tablet computers,
laptops, digital cameras, navigational
devices(GPS), Portable media players, portable
gaming consoles, etc.

Their services range from making phone calls,


surfing the internet, viewing TV programmes,
watching movies, audio players, video gaming,
video recording, navigation, giving presentations,
etc.
LAPTOPS:
It is defined as the Personal Computers for
mobile use. They consist of a display, a keyboard, a
touchpad for cursor tracking, speakers and optical
CD drives all integrated in a compact portable
device.

They have in-built wireless network interface


through which they can access wireless internet
whenever required.
Advantage:

Portability

It consumes much less power

Low cost

Users help them to improve connectivity.

Ex:

Dell laptops, IBM Laptops, Asus Laptops,


Samsung Laptops, Apple Macbooks, HP Laptops,
Acer Laptops.
TABLETS:
A tablet is a wireless touch screen personal
computer (PC) that is smaller than a notebook but
larger than a smartphone.

Modern tablets are built with wireless Internet


or local area networks (LAN) and a variety of
software applications.

They are extensively used for web surfing,


playing games, watching movies, videos or TV shows,
reading e-books or magazines while on the move.
They come with Wi-Fi connectivity for
wirelessly connect to internet and bluetooth to
wirelessly connect to any peripheral devices such as
printers or mouse.
Tablets are available in four different formats.

Convertible:

Rotating touch screen, stylus/digital pen,


keyboard screen software and handwriting
recognition software.
Slate:
Integrated electronic touch screen, i.e., Apple's
iPad
Hybrid:
Standard notebook with a removable screen that
functions as a slate tablet
Rugged:
Slate tablet with protective casing
Ex:
Apple ipad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Sony Tablet S,
etc.
WEARABLE COMPUTERS

A wearable computer is a small computing device


designed to be worn as an accessory on a user’s body,
for example, human clothing, such as belts, jackets,
sunglasses, wrist bands or caps, so that they can be
worn without causing discomfort.

Wearable computers can have specific uses, such


as fitness trackers, or have a wide array of features,
such as a smartwatch with many “smart” functions
similar to those found on a smartphone.
More advanced wearable computing devices allow
users to read and respond to emails, send text
messages, browse the web, view photos or video, and
view social media notifications.

Wearables are typically worn on the wrist (like


smart watches), strapped to the arm, on the head, or
hung from the neck.

Ex:

Baby Monitor, Smart Watches, Fitness tracking


bands, Smart glasses, etc.
CARPUTERS:

A Carputer, or 'CarPC', is a general purpose


computing platform installed and run in a vehicles
for multimedia and navigational purposes.

They are fitted in the front dashboard of a car


and consist of display, keyboard, media player, GPS
navigational unit and internet access interface.

It is primarily used for playing music, watching


DVD movies, tracking locations using GPS or net
surfing, rear view cameras and built in microphones.
ULTRA MOBILE PC:
Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) is a small handheld
computer with the capacity to run the Windows
operating system (OS).

Although it is closer to the size of a palmtop


than a laptop, an Ultra Mobile PC provides more
functionality than a palmtop.

It is mainly used for accessing internet during


travel.
The Ultra-Mobile PC category was created in
2006 by Microsoft™ and several of its hardware
partners to bridge the gap in size and performance
between smartphones and laptop computers.
The UMPC is extensible through conventional
input devices, such as keyboard and mouse.
It can also be equipped with specialized
hardware, such as GPS navigation, cameras, and
dedicated media playback controls.
Some brands of UMPC also come with in-built
digital camera, GPS navigation system, media
player, card reader, games and other special
features.
Ex:
Samsung Q1 UMPC, ASUS R2E and R50A, ACi
Ultra Mini, Sony VAIO U, etc.
MOBILE INTERNET DEVICE (MID):

It is a portable device capable of providing


wireless internet access. They are bigger in size
than smart phones.
It is used for multimedia entertainment
applications, location-based services or accessing
information by users during travel.
They operate on Windows CE, Android or
Windows 7 operating system.
It support two way communication through a
high resolution touch screen.
They are used extensively by people on the go
for accessing social networking sites, such as Face
book, Twitter or YouTube recording or watching HD
movies or videos or sending emails to a friend from
a coffee shop.
Ex:
Nokia N810, Gigabyte M528, Tegra 600., etc.
PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT:
It is also known as Palmtop computer or
handheld computer. It is an electronic organizer or
day planner that stores contact addresses, calendars,
task lists and are capable of sharing information
with laptops or PCs.

Today's devices can also connect to the Internet,


act as global positioning system (GPS) devices, and
run multimedia software.
It can also act as multimedia players, fax
machine and has in-built recognition and
handwriting recognition features.
They support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WLAN
networking and can intranet or extranet through
wireless connectivity.
Apple, which introduced the Newton Message
Pad in 1993.
PDAs are used for Web browsing, office
applications, watching videos, viewing photos or as
mobile phones.
PDA can also be used to listen to favourite
music, watch video or playing games.
Ex:
Abacus PDA Watch, HP Pocket PC iPAQ, Acer
N Series, Apple iPod Touch.
HANDHELD GAME CONSOLE:
It consoles are small lightweight and portable
electronic devices for playing video games. They
have in-built screen, game control buttons and
speakers.
The first electronic game console was
introduced, in 1977, by mittel which was called Auto
Race. Nintendo first popularized the portable game
control with the release of Game Boy in 1989.
Nintendo DS was first introduced in 2004. It
contains two screens one normal, and other touch
screen, wireless internet connectivity, a stylus and a
microphone port along with standard game control
buttons.
There is also an on board radio and recording
facility that attracts players even better. Some other
popular portable gaming devices are:
Pandora, Gizmondo, Nintendo GameBoy, Game
King.
PORTABLE MEDIA PLAYER:

A portable media player, or digital audio player,


is a consumer electronics device that is capable of
storing and playing digital media such as audio,
images, video, documents, etc.
A portable media player is a device that plays
digital media. It is usually small in size, and it can
come in different colors.
The first portable player was introduced in 2002
by a company called Archos.
Archos was founded in 1988, and is famous for
its portable media devices. The first portable
media device played digital video and audio files.

Among other prominent portable media


players are Cowon C2, HDD Divx, Creative Zen,
Walkman, GigaBeat and Network Media Players.
PAGER:
A pager is a portable electronic device that can
receive alert messages in the form of beeps or short
numeric or text messages. There are two types of
pagers available, two way pager or one way pager.
One way pagers can only receive numeric or
alphanumeric messages, and are mainly used in
hospitality industry to tell the customer that is free
table is available or meal is ready.
Two way pagers are capable of both receiving
and sending messages or emails and are widely used
by doctors in hospitals or by relief workers in
disaster situations where normal cellular networks
are not available or are not functioning .
It was introduced in the year 1950 by A1 Gross
in New york. It had a limited range of approximately
40 km. Later in 1974 motorola first introduced
consumer pagers, available to common people who
used to receive alert notifications by the pager on
receiving a message.
Motorola introduced two-way pagers, capable
of sending/receiving numeric or text messages,
SMS or e-mails.
It is extensively used to notify emergency
information to a variety of personnel, such as
medical practitioners, security personnel,
technicians, etc.
PERSONAL NAVIGATION DEVICE (PND):

It is a portable electronic device that


provides positional and navigational information
using GPS system.
The term PNA has come into widespread use
with the growing popularity of automobile
navigation systems. Original PNAs provided
users with a map layer, real-time-traffic, and a
routing engine with audio/visual cues for turn-by-
turn guidance.
PNDs are used in cars to provide turn-by-
turn directions and location-based services. PNDs
typically have 3.5- to 5.2-inch screens and include
maps of a given region stored on internal NAND
flash memory.
MOBILE PHONE:
Mobile Phone or Cellular Phone is a portable
handheld device. It is primarily used for making
calls, to send short text message(SMS) to other mobile
devices, taking stills/videos, sending receiving e-
mails, surfing the net, playing video games and
navigational applications.
Characteristics of Mobile Devices:
Wi-Fi or cellular access to the internet or a
Bluetooth connection to another device.
A battery that powers the device for several
hours.
A physical or on-screen keyboard for entering
information.
The size and weight allow it to be carried in one
hand and manipulated with the other hand.
Touch screen interface in almost all cases.
The ability to download data, such as apps or
books, from the internet or another device.
Wireless operation.
MOBILE NETWORK OPERATORS
MNO offer cell phone services to mobile
customers. They provide wireless connectivity to
numerous mobile customers through mobile
networks.
A MNO must acquire a radio spectrum license
from governing authorities in order to operate in
that radio frequency .
The spectrum acquired must be compatible
with MNO’s underlying network such as GSM,
CDMA, WiMax, 3G or LTE.
Most MNOs own their mobile networks and
networking equipments, and offer voice services,
data services, mobile internet services and other
applications to their customers.
A MNO gives a SIM card to its customer who
inserts it into the mobile phone in order to access
above services.
The major MNOs in US are AT&T, Sprint, T-
Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
Other prominent MNOs include Vodafone,
Telenor, China Mobile, Orange, MTS, MTN Group,
NTT DoCoMo, etc.
In India, most popular mobile operators are
Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel, Tata
Teleservices, BSNL and Idea Cellular.
AT & T:

It is originally known as Bell Telephone is an


American telecommunication corporation
headquartered in Dallas, Texas,USA.
It provides mobile and fixed telephony services
in USA, and also provides broadband internet
service and subscription based television service.
It maintains America’s fastest mobile
broadband network and largest Wi-Fi network and
provides largest international coverage to any US
wireless carrier.
AT & T offers voice coverage, roaming service
and mobile broadband.
It also offers a wide variety of 3G and LTE
compatible Smartphone's and tablets.
Sprint:
Sprint Nextel Corporation is a
Telecommunication company based in Kanas, USA .
It offers a wide range of wireless and wired
communication services to mobile, business and
government users and is widely recognized for
developing, engineering and deploying innovative
technologies including the first wireless 4G services
in USA.
It offers pre-paid data services in collaboration
with Virgin Mobile USA, Boost Mobile and Assurance
wireless.
Sprint operates a combination of 2G, 3G and 4G
wireless networks using 1XRTT/EVDO standard that
supports CDMA technology.
Sprint EVDO data options include Sprint TV,
Sprint Radio, Sprint music store, unlimited web
access , video and picture mail, unlimited chatting
and games. It currently covers around 43 states in
USA and reaches around 190 million customers.
It offers high speed wireless broadband internet
connectivity, 4G mobile services through both Wimax
as well as LTE technology.
Sprint 4G LTE or 4G Wimax service will be
available in Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Apple
iphone 4S smartphones.
Sprint also offers a number of smartphones
and tablets that supports innovative mobile
applications, seamless roaming and superfast
internet access.
Verizon Wireless:
Verizon wireless is a New Jersey, USA based
mobile network operator that has over 110 million
subscribers, the largest number in USA.
It provides mobile networks that follow CDMA
technology. It supports all three generations of
CDMA technology, i.e. IS 95, 1X and EV DO
networks and recently introduced 4G LTE service.
Verizon’s build nation first wide area wireless
broadband network and also delivered nation’s first
wireless 3G multimedia service.
It provides mobile broadband access to laptops,
tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices for
staying connected across the nation.
A leader in wireless voice and data services,
verizon offers a wide range of multimedia
applications, such as VCAST Music for downloading
music, listening to tunes and watching music videos
or video clips from mobile devices.
It also supports 3D games, text and picture
messaging, downloading of ringtones, ringback
tones, games and new alerts.
It provides location based and navigational
services using VZ Navigator GPS application and
supports Push to talk voice transmit/receive
facility in half duplex mode.
VODAFONE
Vodafone is a UK based multinational
telecommunication company headquartered in
London.
The name vodafone originates from Vo(ice),
Da(ta) Fone, signifying voice and data services
over mobile phones.
Vodafone offers voice and data, mobile e-mail
and mobile broadband service, videoconferencing
and instant roaming service.
It also supports Machine to Machine(M2M)
solutions from location monitoring of vehicle as
well as supporting real time secure mobile
payments.
Vodafone personal products include vodafone
live! Vodafone mobile connect USB modem,
vodafone connect to friends, vodafone passports,
vodafone at Home and Amboee media systems.
