● Network devices:
○ Modem: A modem is a device that converts digital signals to
analog signals and vice versa. Modems are used to connect
computers to the Internet.
○ Ethernet card: An Ethernet card is a device that allows a
computer to connect to an Ethernet network. Ethernet
networks are the most common type of wired network.
○ RJ45: RJ45 is a type of connector that is used to connect
Ethernet cables to Ethernet cards.
○ Repeater: A repeater is a device that amplifies the signal on a
network. Repeaters are used to extend the range of a network.
○ Hub: A hub is a device that connects multiple computers
together on a network. Hubs are a simple way to connect a
small number of computers together.
○ Switch: A switch is a device that connects multiple computers
together on a network. Switches are more intelligent than hubs
and can provide better performance.
○ Router: A router is a device that connects two or more
networks together. Routers are used to route data between
networks.
○ Gateway: A gateway is a device that connects two or more
networks that use different protocols. Gateways are used to
translate data between protocols.
○ WiFi card: A WiFi card is a device that allows a computer to
connect to a WiFi network. WiFi networks are a type of
wireless network.
● Network topologies:
○ Bus topology: A bus topology is a network topology in which all
computers are connected to a single cable. Bus topologies are
simple and inexpensive, but they can be difficult to
troubleshoot.

○ Star topology: A star topology is a network topology in which


all computers are connected to a central hub. Star topologies
are easy to troubleshoot and can be expanded easily.
○ Tree topology: A tree topology is a combination of a bus
topology and a star topology. Tree topologies are more reliable
than bus topologies and can be expanded easily.
● Network protocols:
○ HTTP: HTTP is the protocol that is used to transfer hypertext
documents, such as web pages, over the Internet.
○ FTP: FTP is the protocol that is used to transfer files over the
Internet.
○ PPP: PPP is the protocol that is used to connect a computer to
the Internet using a dial-up modem.
○ SMTP: SMTP is the protocol that is used to send email.
○ TCP/IP: TCP/IP is the suite of protocols that is used to connect
computers together on the Internet. TCP/IP is the most widely
used suite of protocols on the Internet.
○ POP3: POP3 is the protocol that is used to receive email.
○ HTTPS: HTTPS is a secure version of HTTP that is used to
transfer data over the Internet securely.
○ TELNET: TELNET is a protocol that is used to connect to a
remote computer and interact with it as if you were sitting at
the computer.
○ VoIP: VoIP is a technology that is used to make voice calls
over the Internet.
● Introduction to web services:
○ WWW: The WWW, or World Wide Web, is a system of
interlinked hypertext documents that are accessed through the
Internet.
○ HTML: HTML, or Hyper Text Markup Language, is the
language that is used to create web pages.
○ XML: XML, or Extensible Markup Language, is a language that
is used to create data formats.
○ Domain names: A domain name is a unique identifier for a
website on the Internet.
○ URL: A URL, or Uniform Resource Locator, is the address of a
website on the Internet.
○ Website: A website is a collection of web pages that are
related to a particular topic.
○ Web browser: A web browser is a software application that is

○ Web servers: A web server is a computer that hosts websites.
○ Web hosting: Web hosting is the service of providing space on
a web server for a website.
