Calculating Circular Permutations

This lesson focuses on calculating circular permutations of objects, teaching learners to compare linear and circular permutations and solve related problems. The number of circular permutations for n objects is determined using the formula (n-1)!. Examples are provided to illustrate the calculation process and practice problems are included for individual and group work.

Lesson 14.

Calculating Circular
Permutations
Learning Competency

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to

illustrate the permutation of objects (M10SP-IIIa-1).
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:

● Accurately compare linear and circular

permutations.

● Correctly calculate circular permutations.

● Correctly solve problems involving circular

permutation.
Let us say that you and nine of your group mates will have a
meeting regarding your performance task. You will have a
meeting around a round table.
How many ways can you arrange yourself around a round table?
In the previous lesson, you learned how to arrange objects in a
circular permutation. However, it would be difficult to
determine the number of circular permutations if there are
many objects to consider. How will you be able to solve that
mathematically?

In this lesson, you will learn how to calculate circular

permutations.
Essential Questions

• Why is it that you have to subtract the number of objects 𝑛

by 1 to determine its circular permutation?

• Is it possible to have the same number of linear and

circular permutations for the same number of objects?

Solving the Number of Circular Permutations of

𝒏 Objects
The number of circular permutations of 𝑛 objects is 𝑛 − 1 !.

Example:
To determine the number of circular permutations of 4
objects, we use the formula 𝑛 − 1 ! with 𝑛 as 4.

𝑛−1 != 4−1 !
= 3!

Example 1: In how many ways can you arrange 5 objects in a

circular pattern?

Solution:
To determine the number of circular permutations of a
group of objects, we use the formula 𝑛 − 1 !. Since there are
5 objects, we use 𝑛 = 5.
Solution to Let’s Practice

Example 1: In how many ways can you arrange 5 objects in a

circular pattern?

Solution:
𝑛−1 != 5−1 !

Solution to Let’s Practice

Example 2: In how many more ways can you arrange 4 objects

in a linear pattern than in a circular pattern?

Solution:
1. Determine the number of linear permutations of 4
objects.

To determine the number of linear permutations of 4

objects, we use the formula !𝑃" with 𝑛 = 4 and 𝑟 = 4.
