1) Vishwakosh
Ans : i) The first Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. Yahswantrao Chavhan initiated the
compilation of Marathi ‘Vishwakosh’ through Maharashtra Rajya Sahitya Sams-
kruti Mandal.
ii) The objective of making Vishwakosh was to enhance the sphere of Marathi lang-
uage and literature.
iii) The work was started under the guidance of Tarkteerth Lakshmanshastri Joshi.
iv) It contains knowledge about all possible subjects in the world. It also contains
very important entries about history.

2) Subaltern History
Ans : i) The seeds of subaltern history are found in the Marxist historiography.
ii) The role of the Italian historian Antonio Gramsci is very important in developing
the idea that history should be written starting from the bottommost ranks of peo-
ple in the society.
iii) Ranjit Guha, an Indian historian played a major role in establishing subaltern hist-
ory as an important academic school of historiography.
iv) However, similar thoughts were expressed by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Dr.
Babasaheb Ambedkar.

1) Foucault called his method, ‘the archaeology of knowledge’.
Ans : i) The French Historian of the twentieth century, Michel Foucault brought forth a
new concept in historiography.
ii) Foucault in his book, ‘Archaeology of Knowledge’, argued that the prevailing
practice of arranging historical events in a chronological order is not right.
iii) He drew attention to the fact that archaeology does not strive to reach the ultimate
historical truth but attempts to explain various transitions in the past.
iv) Foucault felt that explaining the transitions in history is more important. He called
his method, ‘the archaeology of knowledge’.

2) An expert with deep understanding of art history is required in the art market.
Ans : i) Art market is an independent field.
ii) It requires a person with special expertise to assess the exact value of an art object
or to ensure that it is genuine.

Ans : Leopold von Ranké from Berlin University influenced the historiography of the 19th
century.
i) He mentioned about the critical method of historical research and put emphasis on
the utmost importance of information gathered through original documents.
ii) He also stated that all types of documents associated with a historical event need to
be examined with greatest care.
iii) He believed that with this method it was possible to reach the historical truth.
v) He criticised imaginative narration of history.
v) Collection of his articles is published in two books, entitled ‘The Theory and Prac-

Ans : i) The sculptural art is also as ancient as the art of painting, dating back to stone
ages and began with the carving of tools out of stone.
ii) The custom of making clay images for rituals has been prevalent in India since

Gujarat, Rajsthan, etc.
iii) The Ganesha idols, masks of Gauri, bull figurines made for the festival of Bailp-

ages and the history of languages, as well as experts in cultural history of a given
period.
ii) Cinema : a) The art directors of movies create the backdrop designs of atmosph-
ere, costumes and jewellery, makeup, hair styles, etc., suitable to the times of the
theme of the movie. Scholars of history can work in this field as art directors.

1) What are the effects of reducing the voting age from 21 years to 18 years?
Ans : i) After independence the Indian constitution guaranteed adult suffrage by giving the
right to vote equally.
ii) The voting age was further reduced from 21 to 18 which increased participation in
the political process. India has the largest number of voters compared to any other
democratic nation.
iii) It encourages youth participation in public life, giving the younger generation an
opportunity to be the change makers.
iv) The change is not only quantitative but also qualitative as new political parties are
emerging with the active participation of these young voters.

2) Explain the meaning of the Code of Conduct.


Ans : i) The code of conduct in elections is one of the measures adopted by the Election
Commission in order to ensure free and fair elections.
ii) The Code of Conduct explains the rules that are to be followed by the Governm-
ent, political parties and voters before elections and during elections.
iii) Even the Government cannot violate these rules.
iv) The code of conduct is especially useful in controlling malpractices and making
the election process more and more open and just.
