Software| Introduction to the system software

What is an operating system?


This is called system software. The OS controls the entire operation of the
computer. Without it the computer will be useless.

Types of Operating Systems


Windows- a graphic user interface system used by personal computers and
computer networks.

MS DOC- a simple, command driven operating system used on a personal


computers.

Unix- this is used on large mainframe computers and networks.

Application software- refers to programs that perform specific task for


users including word processing software, spreadsheet software, database
software and presentation software.

MS Word- allows you to type, edit, format text and save and print our work.
The program has templates that make producing documents easier. (NB:
keyboard combination, common shortcut buttons.)

MS Excel- it is designed for the manipulation of numerical data such as


calculation. On a spreadsheet you will find:

1. Workbook- this is an Excel file that contains one or more


worksheets.
2. Worksheet- these are the different documents nested within a
Workbook.
3. Cells- A user enters data into a cell, which is the intersection of a
column and row.

Ms Access- this is a database which allows for data to be easily retrieved


managed and updated. Data can be manipulated in many ways:

1. Creating tables.
2. Sorting data alphabetically or chronologically.
3. Searching and retrieving information.
4. Preparing reports.
MS PowerPoint- creates graphics that can present data visually. How to
prepare presentations? The following rules must be applied: (assignment
3 of SBA)

1. 6 lines per slide and no more than 8 words per slide.


2. Create a presentation to capture the audience attention.

3. Give credit, where credit is due.
