Module 2 Assignment 2 28.01.25
Module 2 Assignment 2 28.01.25
Duration: 60 minutes
Subject: The Zoo
Topic: A day at the zoo
Class size: 30 students
Purpose of Lesson: To familiarize students with the different animals found in a zoo. At
the end of the lesson, students will identify the animals, be able to
read their names, write their names, what they eat and the sound
they make. Markable improvement in grammar and pronunciation
will be seen.
Materials: Pictures, audio, video, extracts of relevant reading material.
Assumptions: Students know a few animals in their own language as well as some
animal names in English. Students also have a basic understanding
of what a zoo is
Anticipated problems: Students might struggle with pronunciation and spelling. Students
might be shy or self-conscious. There might be technological issues
i.e. Network, electricity, equipment failure etc.
Solutions: Use visual aids (flashcards, pictured story books etc.). Make use of
student-to-student interaction to assist with pronunciation under
teacher supervision.
Interaction: Combination of Teacher to Student, Student to Teacher and Student
to Student ensuring regular student response and repetition.
Strategy used: PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production)
1. Presentation phase:
Duration: 20 Minutes
Purpose of procedure: To introduce zoo animals and their characteristics.
Interaction Pattern: At this stage, interaction will be mainly between teacher and students
Detailed Strategy:
a) This is when I will introduce the subject and what the objective for the lesson is.
b) I will also discuss the outcome that I would like to achieve at the end of the lesson.
c) I will start with a visual that is fun and would get the immediate attention of the
students for example,
d) I will also display photos of various animals, elicit the names of the animals and
allow the students to repeat the names several times to ensure memory retention
and pronunciation for example,
e) I will give simple descriptions, gestures and hand signals to describe the different
animals, their characteristics, what they eat etc., and let the students repeat it back
to me.
f) This will allow the students to practice pronunciation and describing the different
animals.
2. Practice phase:
Duration: 20 Minutes
Purpose of procedure: To further enhance and reinforce vocabulary as well as speaking skills
Interaction Pattern: At this stage, interaction will be between teacher and student, student
and teacher as well as student to student
Detailed Strategy:
a) I will divide the class into pairs or smaller groups and give each group a set of
picture cards with different zoo animals for example
b) The students will then take turns describing the animals to their group using the
learnt target vocabulary
c) The students should be encouraged to ask questions and provide any expanded
information that they might have
d) Each group will be monitored, and assistance will be provided where necessary
e) When the time is up, allow a few students to share their favorite animal and
description with the whole class.
3. Production Phase:
Duration: 20 Minutes
Purpose of procedure: To apply the target language in a creative and correct way.
Interaction Pattern: At this stage, interaction will be between teacher and student, as well as
student to student
Detailed Strategy:
a) I will instruct and explain to the students to create a dialogue involving zoo
animals that they will act out to the class afterwards.
b) I will then provide a role-play scene or scenario involving zoo animals for
example,
Annie:
“Today is a nice day. I am happy because we are at the zoo.”
Joe:
“Oh look! There is a monkey!”
Annie:
“I don't like monkeys. I like lions. I want to see the lions and the
big elephants and other animals.”
Joe:
“The lions are there. Look! The gate is open.... why is the gate open?”
Annie:
“Don't worry, the lions are sleeping. They like the sun.”
c) The students will then be allowed to design, plan, work on, write and practice
their dialogue in pairs or in groups. Will hand out a few fill the gap exercises
d) Interact with the students to encourage creativity and the use of the target
vocabulary.
e) When allowed time is up, let the students perform their dialogues in front of
the class.
f) Give the students feedback on any challenges that arise.
g) Remember to praise the students for their effort
During your presentation you are supposed to explain the work that will be done. Student
do not work during this period as they have to listen to your instructions/information given
etc. You should introduce vocabulary, link to concepts, practice pronunciation etc. Drill and
repeat!
Practice phase is for testing your students’ knowledge based on what you have taught
during your presentation. Give them some fill the gap activities or matching pictorials etc.
Activity should be based on your topic/subject and what you taught during your
presentation.
Your production phase is for allowing your students to become independent of you / the
teacher. Allow them to play a game, do a role-play, have a discussion or do a survey. Bare
in mind that these activities should still take place under your supervision as they hardly
understand English.
