ME-322 Manufacturing Processes
Second Semester 2023- 2024 (233)

Course Manufacturing methods of metals and alloys include metal casting,


Description welding, bulk forming, sheet metal forming, and machining, processes.
Both quantitative and qualitative study of manufacturing processes with
emphasis on process selection for optimum design. Guidelines and best
practices for ease of manufacturing. Design of casting molds, sheet metal
blanking/punching dies and machining processes.

ME322 Prerequisites: Mechanical Engineering Drawing & Graphics (ME 210) or Engineering
Graphics (CE 101), Material Science for ME (ME 216 and ME 217)

M. P. Groover, Principles of Modern Manufacturing: Materials, Processes, and Systems Global
Edition John Wiley & Sons, Singapore, 2017 + Lectures Slides + Slides/handouts on Bernoulli
equations, Buoyancy force, and Reynold’s number.

Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to
1. Discuss basic manufacturing processes and stress their capabilities and limitations.
2. Teach students to analyze metals manufacturing processes.
3. Relate the dependence of manufacturing process on material properties and of the
integrity of the manufactured part on processing method.

Prerequisites by topic:
1. Reading technical drawings.
2. Properties of engineering materials.
3. Phase diagrams.
4. Heat treatment processes.
5. Testing of materials.

Examination Dates and Grade Breakdown:

Midterm Exam. (Weight fraction within the total grade: 35%)


• Exam Duration 1.5-2 hrs.
• Exam consists of ~60 % Numerical Problems and ~ 40% (Multiple Choice, T/F)
• Date and Time: July 21, 2024, at 7:00 pm
• Location: TBA

Final Exam. (Weight fraction within the total grade: 40%)


• Exam Duration 2 hours

• Exam consists of ~60 % Numerical Problems and ~40% (Multiple Choice, T/F)

• Location: See Registrar’s notification

Note: All exams will be conducted with closed books. A formulae sheet consisting of summary of equations at
the end of relevant chapters may be provided in each exam. Other basic formulae will not be provided, and
students are supposed to remember or derive such fundamental equations.

Homework (Weight fraction within the total grade: 5%)


• Homework must be submitted online on the blackboard on the due date.
• Homework solutions will be posted on blackboard under the assignment section after the due date.
• If due time passes without submission, 0 (zero) grade will be given for that assignment.
• Plagiarism in the HW (copy the homework): First time, zero mark will be given Second time, an (F) grade
or zero mark on total HW grade will be given.

Quizzes and IBL activity/class participation (Weight fraction within the total grade: 20%)
No excuses will be accepted for missing any quiz.
No excuses will be accepted for missing any quiz. However, if more than 5 quizzes are taken, the quiz with the
lowest grade will not be counted. There will be no make-up quiz for any reason.

Final Grade:
ME322 final grade is based on an average of the course.

Attendance Policy
0.5 point will be deducted from the final grade of the course. A DN grade will be immediately reported for nine (9)
unexcused absences, according to the regulations. A DN grade will also be reported when the sum of the excused
and unexcused absences reaches fifteen (15). ANY OFFICIAL EXCUSE FOR NOT ATTENDING A CLASS
MUST BE SUBMITTED IN PERSON WITHIN ONE WEEK OF ABSENTED CLASS; ELSE, IT WILL
NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe and distinguish the processes involved in component manufacture.
2. Identify the issues pertaining to casting processes.
3. Explain mechanical behavior of materials involving plastic deformation.
4. Identify the issues pertaining to bulk forming processes.
5. Identify the issues pertaining to sheet metal forming processes.
6. Identify the issues pertaining to metal cutting processes.
7. Explain the joining processes which utilize welding.
8.
Relate manufacturing processes parameters to product design.
9. Understand the impact of manufacturing processes on the society, environment, and global
economy.
