Cell Transport Summary

There are two main types of cellular transport: Passive and Active

PASSIVE TRANSPORT
Passive Transport moves molecules with (or down) a concentration
gradient. (From an area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration)

Passive Transport does NOT require energy input (No ATP needed)

Three Types
A.​ Diffusion:
(Sometimes
called Simple
Diffusion)
Molecules move
into/out of cell
squeezing
through
membrane

B. Facilitated Diffusion: Moves LARGE


molecules into/out of
cell using a carrier protein. Still from high
to low just too large or too charged to go
through the phospholipid bilayer of cell
membrane
C. Osmosis (Diffusion of Water):Applies specifically to movement of
Water: Instead of the solute particle moving- the water moves.

HYPERTONIC: Concentration of solution is hyper (above) cell. WAter


rushes out of the cell to try and dilute the solution. Cell shrinks-
Remember Hyper is tiny

HYPOTONIC: Concentration of solution is hypo (below cell. Water


rushes into the cell to try and dilute the cell. Cell swells.

ISOTONIC: Concentration of cell is equal to the solution. No change


in water or size
ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Active Transport moves molecules against a concentration gradient. (From
an area of low concentration UPHILL to an area of High concentration.)

Active transport DOES require energy input (Needs ATP)

Examples are Pumps and Endo/ExoCytosis
