The document outlines the exam details for the Theory of Structures V course (ECE 4214), including the duration, starting time, and submission deadlines. It presents two sets of calculations (CAT 1 and CAT 2) related to a rigid frame and a two-story frame, requiring the calculation of natural frequencies, damping coefficients, dynamic load factors, and displacement responses. Students are instructed to fill out a Google form and submit scanned copies of their work via email by specified times.

CAT 1
a. A rigid frame of mass of 10 kg and stiffness of 2000 N/m is displaced by 0.1 m and then released
suddenly. After 1 cycle the displacement is recorded as 0.05 m.
Calculate the following:
1. Natural frequency
2. Damped natural frequency
3. Critical damping coefficient
4. Absolute damping coefficient
5. Logarithmic decrement

b. If the same frame has a damping ratio of 0.05 and is subjected to a dynamic force of 𝐹(𝑡) =
50 sin (15.71𝑡) at girder level
Calculate the following:

• Frequency ratio
• Dynamic load factor
• Steady state amplitude of vibration
• Force transmitted to the foundation.

c. Calculate the same in b above considering of in resonance

CAT 2
For a two-story frame of mass 𝑚1 = 𝑚2 = 1000 𝑘𝑔 and stiffness 𝑘1 = 𝑘2 = 50 𝑘𝑁/𝑚. Calculate the
following:

• Natural frequencies
• Displacement response
• Displacement at 1 second for the masses if the initial conditions are x1(0) = 0.01 m, x2(0) =
0.02 m, v1(0) =0 m/s and v2(0) =0 m/s.
Use 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑋𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑤𝑡 + ∅) in obtaining the dynamic response
