ME2003D Assignment 3

The document outlines a series of engineering problems related to the design and analysis of shafts under various loading conditions, including solid and hollow shafts, tapered shafts, and the calculation of shear stress and angle of twist. It includes specific calculations for maximum torque, shear stress, and comparisons of torsional strength and weight ratios. The problems utilize material properties, such as shear modulus, and require understanding of torsional mechanics and material behavior under load.

ME2003D: Assignment 3

1. A solid propeller shaft is to transmit 4.5 MW at 3 Hz without exceeding a shear stress of 50

MPa or twisting through more than 1 degree in a length of 26 diameters. Compute the
smallest acceptable diameter of the shaft. Use G = 83 GPa.
2. The steel shaft with two different diameters rotates at 4 Hz. The power supplied to gear C is
55 kW, of which 35 kW is removed by gear A and 20 kW is removed by gear B. Find (a) the
maximum shear stress in the shaft; and (b) the angle of rotation of gear A relative to gear C.
Use G = 83 GPa for steel.

3. The inner diameter of a hollow shaft is equal to half its outer diameter D. Show that the
torsional strength of the shaft is equal to 15/16 of the solid shaft of diameter D. Also
compare the torsional strength to weight ratio of unit length of the two shafts.
4. A steel shaft of length 3.5 m is made by attaching a hollow shaft (length 2 m, outer dia 100
mm, inner dia 70 mm) to a solid shaft (length 1.5 m, diameter 70 mm). Determine the
maximum torque that can be applied to the free end of the shaft (assuming the other end to be
fixed) without exceeding a shear stress of 70 MPa or an angle of twist of 2.5o in 3.5 m length.
Use G = 83 GPa for steel.
5. A tapered, wrought iron shaft of length 5 ft, has 2 inch diameter at the fixed end and 0.8 inch
diameter at the free end. Determine the angle of twist of the shaft, if it carries a torque, T =
2000 lb-in at the free end. Use G = 107 psi for wrought iron.
6. Both ends of the steel shaft are attached to rigid supports. Find the distance a, where the
torque T must be applied so that the reactive torques at A and B are equal.

7. Two identical metal sheets (same width and thickness) are formed into tubes with circular
and square cross sections as shown. Determine the ratio of maximum shear stresses and the
ratio of twist per unit length, if same torque is applied on the tubes.

9. A torque of 3300 N-m is transmitted through a 50 mm diameter shaft having a yield strength
in shear of 1.1×108 Pa. Is there plastic deformation for this loading? If so, how far has the
plastic action penetrated into the shaft (from the surface) assuming linear elastic – perfectly
plastic material behavior? What is the maximum torque that can be carried by the member?
10. Consider a hollow steel shaft with a 130 mm outside diameter and a 70 mm inside diameter.
What is the maximum torque this shaft can transmit if the yield strength in shear is 1.4×108
Pa and the material behavior is linear elastic – perfectly plastic?
