UE23MA241B - Linear Algebra and its Applications

Unit –1 Assignment Questions

Sections: 4B, 4D
Faculty: Dr. Ashwini H. R.

Instructions:
1. Submit the assignment in a blue book, clearly writing your name, section and
SRN.
2. Strict deadline for submission: 10 February 2025 Monday.
3. Late submission will be awarded reduced marks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Draw the row picture and column picture of the given system of equations
and find its solution: 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 4; 2𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 4

Solve the following system of linear equations using Gaussian elimination

method.
2. 2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 1; 2𝑥 + 6𝑦 + 8𝑧 = 3; 6𝑥 + 8𝑦 + 18𝑧 = 5

3. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 − 6𝑧 = −10; 2𝑥 + 𝑦 − 5𝑧 = −8; 6𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 0

4. 𝑥 + 𝑧 = 1; 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 2; 𝑥 − 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 1

5. Find an equation relating 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐, such that the linear system is consistent.
What is the solution of the system, when (𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐) = (2,3,9)?
𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 𝑎
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 𝑏
5𝑥 + 9𝑦 − 6𝑧 = 𝑐
6. For what values of 𝑎 and 𝑏 does the following system have (i) a unique
solution (ii) Infinitely many solutions (iii) No solution.
𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 2
−𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 𝑎𝑧 = −2
2𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 6𝑧 = 5

7. Which elementary matrices put the matrix A into an upper triangular matrix
U?
2 −1 0 0
−1 2 −1 0
𝐴=[ ]
0 −1 2 −1
0 0 −1 2

8. Find the A= 𝐿𝑈 factorization given

1 −1 0 3
2 −2 0 8
𝐴=[ ]
−1 −1 4 2
−2 −2 6 −3
Write the permutation matrices, if any.

Find the 𝑃𝐴 = 𝐿𝐷𝑈 decomposition for the following matrices:

0 1 1
9. 𝐴 = [ 1 0 1]
2 3 4

1 2 1
10. 𝐴 = [ 2 4 2]
1 1 1

11. Use the Gauss-Jordan method to invert the following matrix

1 2 −1
𝐴 = [−1 1 2]
2 −1 1

12. Assume that the plate shown in the figure represents a cross-section of a
metal beam with negligible heat flow in the direction perpendicular to the
plate. Let T1, T2, T3 and T4 denote those temperatures at the four interior
nodes of the mesh. The temperature at a node is approximately equal to the
average of the four nearest nodes – to the right, left above and below. For
instance, T1=(10+20+T2+T4)/4 or T1-T2-T4=30. Write a system of 4
equations whose solution gives estimates for the temperatures T1, T2, T3
and T4. Hence find its solution.
