Fluid Mechanics Problem Set 1

The document is a problem set for the Mechanics of Fluids course at the University of the Philippines Diliman for the first semester of the academic year 2019-2020. It includes six problems related to fluid mechanics, requiring calculations of forces, volumes, pressures, and specific gravities in various scenarios. Students are instructed to solve the problems independently and submit three graded solutions by September 4, 2019.

ES 15: MECHANICS OF FLUIDS

Problem Set 1
First Semester, A.Y. 2019-2020
General Instructions: Solve the following problems independently. Remember that the problem
sets are intended to prepare you for the long exams. It is to your benefit, not mine, if you solve the
following problems on your own. You may schedule a consultation with me first if you want to
discuss your solution before submitting. Only 3 problems will be graded and must be passed on
September 4, 2019, Wednesday, at the start of the class.

Problem 1
Neglecting the weight of the gate,
determine the force exerted by the
stopper. The weight of the block is
20 kN.

Problem 2

Determine the minimum volume of concrete (SGconcrete = 2.40) needed

to keep the 1-meter wide gate in a closed position in the condition
where l = 2 meters.

Problem 3

For the set-up shown in the figure, determine

the minimum value of P needed to hold the
quarter-circular gate AB (hinged at A).
Assume unit width and neglect the weight of
the gate.

Problem 4

The 1-m radius hemispherical gate of mass 1000 kg is held in

position by a 4-m diameter cylindrical buoy of mass 100 kg.
Determine the minimum required depth of submergence of the
buoy to keep the gate closed. The fluid is water. NOTE: There is no
fluid below the gate.

Problem 5

A 2-m wide open rectangular tank with

length of 5 meters and height of 3 meters
contains 18 m3 of water. It is mounted on a
truck that travels along a 5o inclined road.
What is the maximum acceleration, a,
(parallel to the inclined road) that the truck
can have so that there will be no water
spilled? Calculate the maximum pressure on
the tank at the instant when water is about
to spill.

Problem 6

In a certain factory, 3000 liters of chemical A will be mixed with 5000

liters of chemical B on a 2.4-meter diameter, 4-meter high cylindrical
mixing tank. After the mixing process, a negligible amount of the
mixture was sampled to determine its specific gravity using a
hydrometer. The hydrometer used has a mass of 50.4 g and floats on
the surface of the mixture as shown in the figure. What is the specific
gravity of the mixture? During the mixing process, the tank was
rotated about its center at a certain angular speed, ω. If it was
observed that the maximum pressure on the mixing tank was 50 kPa
while it is rotating, determine the value of ω. Assume ideal mixing.
