Compound Prepositions, Subordinating Conjunctions, and Punctuation

1. Compound Prepositions

A compound preposition is a combination of two or more words that function as a single


preposition. They show relationships between nouns, pronouns, or phrases in a sentence.

Examples of Compound Prepositions:

 According to
 Ahead of
 Along with
 Apart from
 Because of
 By means of
 In addition to
 In front of
 In spite of
 On behalf of
 Out of
 With regard to

Example Sentences:

1. He succeeded because of his hard work.


2. In addition to playing the piano, she sings beautifully.
3. The car stopped suddenly in front of the building.

2. Subordinating Conjunctions
A subordinating conjunction connects a dependent clause to an independent clause. It shows
the relationship between the two clauses, such as time, cause, condition, contrast, etc.

Examples of Subordinating Conjunctions:

 Time: after, before, while, when, until, as soon as


 Cause/Reason: because, since, as
 Condition: if, unless, provided that
 Contrast: although, though, even though
 Purpose: so that, in order that
 Result: so, such that

Example Sentences:

1. I stayed home because it was raining.


2. Although she was tired, she completed her homework.
3. You can go to the park if you finish your chores.

3. Punctuation

Punctuation marks are essential tools for clarity and structure in writing.

Common Punctuation Marks:

1. Period (.): Used at the end of declarative sentences.


o Example: She is reading a book.
2. Comma (,): Used to separate elements in a sentence, such as items in a list or clauses.
o Example: I bought apples, oranges, and bananas.
o Example: When I arrived, he was leaving.
3. Question Mark (?): Used at the end of interrogative sentences.
o Example: Where are you going?
4. Exclamation Mark (!): Used to show strong emotion or emphasis.
o Example: What a beautiful day!
5. Semicolon (;): Links closely related independent clauses.
o Example: She loves chocolate; he prefers vanilla.
6. Colon (:): Introduces a list, explanation, or quotation.
o Example: He brought three items: a book, a pen, and a notebook.
7. Quotation Marks (“ ”): Used to enclose direct speech or quotations.
o Example: She said, “I am very happy.”
8. Apostrophe (’): Shows possession or forms contractions.
o Example: Sarah’s book is on the table.
9. Dash (—): Indicates a break in thought or additional emphasis.
o Example: He finally arrived—an hour late!
10. Parentheses ( ): Encloses additional information or asides.

 Example: She completed her project (despite many obstacles).
