Physics: An Overview

Physics is the branch of science that studies matter, energy, and the fundamental
forces of nature. It seeks to understand how the universe behaves, from the smallest
subatomic particles to the vastness of galaxies. Physics is divided into classical and
modern physics, each covering different aspects of nature’s laws.

Branches of Physics

1. Classical Physics – Deals with macroscopic phenomena. Includes:

Mechanics (motion, force, energy; e.g., Newton’s Laws)

Thermodynamics (heat, temperature, and energy transfer)

Optics (study of light and vision)

Electromagnetism (electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic waves)

2. Modern Physics – Focuses on microscopic and high-speed phenomena.

Includes:

Quantum Mechanics (behavior of particles at atomic and subatomic levels)

Relativity (Einstein’s theories on space, time, and gravity)

Nuclear Physics (study of atomic nuclei and radioactivity)

Fundamental Laws of Physics

Newton’s Laws of Motion – Explain how objects move under force.

Law of Universal Gravitation – Objects attract each other with a force proportional to
their masses.

Laws of Thermodynamics – Govern energy transfer and entropy.

Maxwell’s Equations – Describe electromagnetism.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity – States that time and space are relative.

Applications of Physics

Technology – Basis for electronics, engineering, and computing.

Medicine – X-rays, MRI scans, and radiation therapy.

Space Exploration – Rockets, satellites, and astrophysics.

Energy – Nuclear power, renewable energy, and electric grids.

Physics is the foundation of modern science, explaining the principles behind natural
phenomena and driving technological advancements.
