IS Project Part: 1 (TYPES OF INFORMATION SYSTEM PROJECTS)

General Questions on IS Projects

1. Types of Projects: Identify and describe the nine distinct types of IS projects mentioned in the text. For each type,
provide an example scenario where it might be used.

 Software Development Project

Involves creating, testing, and maintaining a software application to address a specific issue.

Example Scenario: An app is developed for a company to handle customer service tickets, which is
continuously tested for bugs, improved for user experience, and updated with new features.

 Package Implementation Project

This project involves purchasing and installing a pre-built software system that already meets the
company’s specific requirements.

Example Scenario: A retail company implements an ERP system to manage its financial and inventory
operations.

 System Enhancement Project

Aims to upgrade, expand, or modify an existing system to improve performance or meet new business
needs.

Example Scenario: A healthcare provider develops a mobile app for patients to schedule and manage
appointments.

 Consultancy and Business Analysis Assignments

This involves hiring experts to provide guidance and analysis to help businesses address challenges or
improve operations.
Example Scenario: A manufacturing company hires a consultant to optimize its supply chain processes
and identify cost-saving opportunities.

 System Migration Projects

Entails moving data or systems to new technologies to improve performance or take advantage of new
capabilities.

Example Scenario: A small business transitions from an outdated desktop-based accounting system to a
cloud-based one, transferring all its financial data.

 Outsourcing and (In-sourcing) Projects

- Involves either outsourcing a business function to an external provider or bringing a previously outsourced
task back in-house.

Example Scenario: A company that outsourced IT support brings the function back in-house after
dissatisfaction with the service.

 Disaster Recovery Projects

sThese projects are focused on restoring IT operations and systems following a disaster or technical
failure.
Example Scenario: A company’s data center is damaged by a fire, and the recovery team restores data
from a backup stored off-site.

 Smaller IS Projects
- These are small-scale system improvements or enhancements that are more limited in scope than larger
projects.
Example Scenario: The IT department replaces a broken printer in the office with a new one.

 Project Management Skills: What specific skills are required for managing each type of IS project? How
do these skills address the unique challenges of each type?

This is vital for understanding the technologies used in IS projects and addressing technical challenges like
system integration or troubleshooting:

Communication Skills
Ensures that all stakeholders are kept informed and aligned throughout the project. This is especially
crucial in complex or cross-functional projects where communication breakdowns can lead to delays or
misunderstandings.

Leadership
Helps in motivating the team, resolving conflicts, and guiding the project toward completion, which is
especially important in large, collaborative projects.

Critical Thinking
Enables the project manager to solve problems creatively and manage unforeseen issues, which is
important in projects with shifting requirements or unexpected hurdles.

Flexibility
Assists in adapting to changes and responding to challenges effectively, especially when project goals or
client needs evolve.

Case Study-Specific Questions

2. Based on the France Vacances case study, what key considerations should E-Con focus on during the
requirements analysis phase?
- Key Considerations during Requirements Analysis E-Con should focus on understanding France Vacances'
business needs, customer expectations, data management, and security. Ensuring the system is flexible and user-
friendly should be a priority for meeting both current and future needs.

4. How should the project manager at E-Con handle communication with France Vacances stakeholders to
ensure project success?

- The project manager should set up regular communication channels, such as emails, video calls, and meetings, to
provide updates and manage expectations, fostering trust and collaboration with France Vacances stakeholders.

5. Project Deadline Challenges: The project must be completed in three months. Identify potential risks due to
this compressed timeline and propose strategies to mitigate them.

-To manage the compressed timeline, the project manager should prioritize critical requirements, adopt agile
methodologies for quicker iteration, and maintain clear communication with stakeholders to ensure timely completion.

6. Evaluate the importance of the "skills transfer" component in this project. How should ECon ensure that France
Vacances’s IT department is prepared for maintenance?

-E-Con should provide comprehensive training for France Vacances’ IT team to ensure they can maintain the new
system after the project concludes. This may involve hands-on training, detailed documentation, and ongoing support.

Critical Thinking and Advanced Application

7. Disaster Recovery Preparation:

Given the reliance on the new system for online bookings, what disaster recovery measures should be included to
ensure business continuity?

suggestions, which could improve customer loyalty, increase bookings, and provide a better overall experience.

10. Ethical Considerations: The project involves handling customer data and credit card information. What ethical
and security measures should be prioritized to protect user privacy?
