2.

Principle
Estimation is based on neutralisation reaction
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
Procedure
Solution in Burette - HCl
Solution in Pipette - NaOH
Indicator - Phenolphthalein
End Point - Pink to Colourless
1. Estimation of NaOH
HCl X NaOH (Phenolphthalein)
Trial No Volume of NaOH (ml) Burette Reading Volume of HCl
Initial Final (ml)
1 20 0 19.8
2 20 0 19.7 19.7
3 20 0 19.7
Calculations
Mass / Litre of HCl = 3.7 g
Equivalent mass of HCl = 36.5

Normality of HCl (N1) = Mass/Litre

Equivalent mass

= 3.7 = 0.10137 N
36.5
Volume of HCl (V1) = 19.7 ml

Volume of NaOH (V2) = 20 ml

N1V1=N2V2

Therefore, Normality of NaOH (N2) = N1V1

V2
= 0.10137 x 19.7 =0.09985 N
20
Equivalent mass of NaOH = 40
Mass/Litre of NaOH = Normality of NaOH x Equivalent mass
= 0.09985 x 40 = 3.994 g/l
Mass of NaOH in the whole of the given solution = Mass/litre of NaOH x 100
1000
= 0.3994 g
RESULT
Mass of NaOH in the whole of the given solution = 0.3994 g
Normality of NaOH = 0.09985 N
