Are we done?
Yes, Sir.
Do we have absentees today? Ms. Peverlyn
None, Sir
I’m glad that everyone is around.
Please give us a recap about our discussion
last meeting, Mr. Amador.
Last meeting, we discussed about Right
Triangle Similarity Theorem. It state that if
the attitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of a
right triangle, then the two triangle formed
are similar to the original triangle and to
each other.
Very well said, Mr. Amador
How will you describe a right triangle? Mr.
Sandy
It has an angle measuring 90 degrees.
Precisely!
We have here ΔABC, name the hypotenuse
and the legs. Ms. Buenafe
A
B C
Hypotenuse – AC
Legs- AB and BC
Very Good! Ms. Buenafe
Do we have an assignment?
None, Sir
A. Activity
Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s
have an activity first called “Word Rumble”.
There will be words presented then you just
have to get the correct word by saying and
connecting it (Sounds like game) read again
and again to get the correct word. All
answers are connected to our topic
“Pythagorean Theorem”.
Are we clear?
Yes, Sir.

Those who got the correct answer will have
additional points for the individual activity.
B. Analysis
Anyone who can repeat what are the words
we get? Ms. Sabalan
Hypotenuse, Pythagoras, Right,Triangle
Square, Legs. Side, and Length
Excelent!
Anyone who can guess which of the words
is a person’s name? Ms. Pasobillo
Pythagoras
Good!
What do you think is the connection of
Pythagoras to our topic?
Probably, Pythagoras is a mathematician.
He discovered or proved the Pythagorian
theorem.
Precisely!
Pythagoras is a Greek mathematician and
philosopher, who was credited with many
mathematical and scientific discoveries,
including the Pythagorean Theorem is name
after Pythagoras of Samas.
The remaining words will be encountered as
we go through our discussion.
The Pythagorean Theorem is one of the
best known and most useful theorems in all
of mathematics. It describes a special
relationship between the sides of a triangle.
To understand it better, please read the
meaning of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Ms. Obias
Pythagorean theorem states that, in a right
triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is
equal to the sum of the square of the legs.
c2= a2 + b2.
Ms. Obias said “Right triangle” because
Pyhtagorean theorem is applicable only in
right triangle.
So, What again a right triangle is? Ms. Liza
A right triangle with one right angle, that is,
a 90 degree angle.
Good!
Let’s say we have ΔABC.
Label the angles of a triangle with capital
letters, and the side opposite each angle
with the corresponding lower-case letter.
Side a is opposite angle A
Side b is opposite angle B
Side C is opposite angle C
Side c is called the hypotenuse.
What can we notice about out hypotenuse,
Mr. Casida?
Hypotenuse is the longest side and it’s the
side opposite the right angle.
Great observation!
How about sides a and b, what can we
notice, Ms. Ara
Sides a and b are the two shorter sides.
Based on the meaning of Pythagorean
theorem itself, they are also called the legs
of the triangle.
Keep up the good work!
With that being said, when do we use the
Pyhtagorean theorem, Mr. Amador?
The Pythagorean Theorem is Basically used
to find the length of any missing sides of a
right triangle, provided we know the length
of its other two sides.
Let’s have an example.
Ms. Jevea find the unknown side of figure 1.
c
a=3
b=4
Figure 1
c2= a2 + b2
c2= 32 + 42
c2= 9 + 16
c2= 25
c =√25
c=5
You’re attentive!
To find the hypotenuse, we will substitute a
and b in the Pythagorean formula. Simplify
and find the length of side c by taking the
positive square root of the both sides of the
equation. Mr. betito, find the unknown side
of figure 2.
c
a=5
b = 12
Figure 2
c2= a2 + b2
c2= 52 + 122
c2= 25 + 144
c2= 169
c =√169
c = 13
Good job!
C. Abstraction
Let’s solve the following problems using the
Pythagorean theorem.
1. A 10-feet ladder is leaning against a
vertical wall. If the foot of the ladder
is 6 feet from the wall, how high does
the ladder reach?
Drawing a diagram or other type of
visual representation is often a good
starting for solving any kinds of world
problems.
So, we need to illustrate the given
problem first to easily solve for the
missing side.
Please illustrate it, Ms. Benaid.
10 f b
6f
Please explain his work, Ms. Jam
The illustration is correct. Let the length of
the ladder represent the length of the
hypothenuse or c = 10, since it is leaning
against a vertical wall. One leg measures 6
feet and we are to find the length of the
other leg.
How high will the ladder reach, Ms. Rachel?
c2= a2 + b2
102= 62 + b2
100= 36 + b2
b2= 100-36
b2= 64
b =√64
b=8
therefore, the ladder reaches 8 feet up the
wall.
Fantastic!
Before we proceed to our next problem, let’s
recall the four cardinal direction. State the
four cardinal direction. State the four
cardinal directios, Mr. Roy
The north, south, east, and west. They can
be abbreviated as N, S, E, and W.
Please illustrate them, Mr. Roy.
N
W E
S
Very Good!
Is eastward the same with the due east,
class?
Yes, Sir.
Good. They are just the same, due east
means going east or towards east.
Now, illustrate and solve the given problem
2, Ms. Jam.
2. Maria walks 9m due east then 12m
due south. How far is she from her
starting point?
9m
Starting point
12m
End point
a = 9m, b = 12m, c = ?
c2= a2 + b2
c2= 92 + 122
c2= 81 + 144
c2= 225
c =√225
c = 15
Therefore, maria is 15m away from her
starting point.
Keep up the good work!
As we can see, Pythagorean theorem is
used to find the distance between the initial
and final points.
Are there any questions?
None, Sir.
D. Application
We’ll be having an activity.
The class will be divided into two groups.
Following the alphabetical order of our
surnames, Mr. Abiera to Ms. Bristol will be
the group 1. Ms. Cardama to Ms. Vibal will
be group 2.
Choose a reporter from each group to
present our outputs later. We only have 10
minutes to do the given task. After that, we’ll
have the presentation of outputs or
reporting. Are we done.
Yes, Sir.
Let’s begin with group 1.
The given problem to our group is, the size
of the screen of a television set is usually
given in terms of its diagonals. Find the
length of the diagonal of a screen 15 in wide
and 20 in long.
20 inches
15 inches
a = 15, b = 20, c= ?
c2= a2 + b2
c2= 152 + 202
c2= 225 + 400
c2= 625
c =√625
c = 15
c2= a2 + b2
c2= 252 + 602
c2= 625 + 3600
c2= 4225
c =√4225
c = 65
