VI. CHALLENGES AND RISKS

One of the primary challenges for the "Smart Door Lock" project is security vulnerabilities. Since the
lock will be connected to the internet or a mobile app, there’s a potential risk of hacking or unauthorized
access. To mitigate this, the system should incorporate strong encryption for all data transfers between the
lock, app, and cloud storage. Adding two-factor authentication (2FA) for app access would further
enhance security, while regular software updates can ensure the system remains protected against
emerging threats. Another concern is the lock’s battery life and the possibility of power failure, which
could prevent it from functioning. To address this, the system should notify users when the battery is
running low and include a backup power source, such as a USB charger or emergency battery.
Additionally, optimizing energy efficiency in the lock can help prolong its battery life. Connectivity
issues, such as weak or interrupted Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signals, could also cause problems, but offering
both connection options and a manual unlock feature would ensure the lock remains functional even in
the event of a connectivity issue.
User experience is another significant challenge. The lock must be easy to install and operate, or it may
frustrate users. To improve user experience, the app should have an intuitive interface with simple, step-
by-step installation instructions. Providing accessible customer support and troubleshooting guides would
also be helpful. As for the hardware, durability is key—especially since the lock will need to withstand
wear, tampering, and weather conditions. Using high-quality, weather-resistant materials, along with
tamper detection sensors, can address these concerns. Additionally, extensive testing should be done to

ensure the lock can endure various environmental conditions and physical interference. Compatibility
with different door types is another challenge, as the lock may not fit all doors. To mitigate this, the
design should be universal, and the company could offer adapter kits to fit non-standard doors, along with
clear compatibility information for customers.
Privacy concerns are bound to arise, especially since the lock will collect data on access and usage. To
address these, the project should minimize the data collected, anonymize it where possible, and be
transparent about what information is stored and how it’s used. Allowing users control over their data is
essential, and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations like GDPR and CCPA will help build trust.
The cost of the smart lock may also present a challenge, particularly if it’s priced too high compared to
competitors. To manage this, the company can focus on cost-effective manufacturing processes and offer
multiple pricing tiers to cater to a wide range of customers. Highlighting unique features or superior
quality can also differentiate the product from competitors. Lastly, user adoption and trust could be a
barrier for those hesitant about smart technology. To build confidence, educational campaigns can be
launched, showcasing the lock’s benefits and ease of use through demos, videos, and tutorials. Third-
party certifications for security and quality would also enhance credibility, and showcasing positive
customer reviews can help establish trust among potential users.
By addressing these challenges head-on with thoughtful mitigation strategies, the project can ensure the
smart door lock is secure, user-friendly, and trusted by its customers.
