technology have had a great impact on people’s life by bringing revolutions in various fields.
Technology has reduced the effort and time and it has made our ever day’s life easy, comfortable, healthy, and
enjoyable. Today, we cannot live without using electronic gadgets from cooking our meals to cleaning our houses.
Gadgets like the microwave oven, the washing machine, the dishwasher have become a necessity and the best friends in
practicing our daily routines.
With the advent of technology in communication which includes telephone, fax machine, cellular phone, Internet,
multimedia, email, communication has become much faster and easier. We no longer need to rely on sending physical
letters and wait for several days for a response. Technology has made communication so simple that you can connect with
anyone from anywhere by calling via mobile phone or messaging them.
Technology is making education improve over time. With technology, students and parents have a variety of learning
tools at their fingertips. Teachers can coordinate with classrooms across the world and share their ideas and resources online.
Teachers and students can access plenty of resources available on the web and utilize them for their project work, research,
etc.

History is rich of many important people like scientists, inventors, philosophers, mathematicians and others who have
contributed positively in making huge improvements in different fields. Elias Zerhouni is an Algerian-born American
scientist, radiologist and biomedical engineer. He was born in a small village called Nedroma in western Algeria on April 12,
1951. When he was a kid, Zerhouni was influenced by both his father was a math professor and by his maternal uncle, a well-
known radiologist. Zerhouni chose radiology as his field, and after receiving his medical degree in 1975 from the University
of Algiers, he moved to the United States at the age of 24 with his wife, Nadia. Zerhouni wanted to achieve his dreams in
Algeria but he faced many obstacles like the negligence of scientific research and the lack of financial support.
After immigrating to the U.S, he has become a leader in the fields of radiology and medicine. Zerhouni held the positon of
Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States of America from 2002 to 2008. In November 2009,
Dr. Zerhouni was appointed one of the first presidential U.S. science envoys by President Obama. His many contributions
include promotion of genetic research, support for advances of biodefense research and helping raise awareness of women's
heart disease.

The listening script:
Part One:
Journalist: Hello everyone today's radio show is about the darker side of inventions and discoveries and ways to
boost the benefits of the new technologies for a better life. Our guest is Robert Winston, Professor of Science and
Society. How are you Mr. Robert and welcome to the show.
Mr. Robert: Hello everyone, I am fine and happy to be a part of your interesting show.
Journalist: So Mr. Robert what can you say about human inventions and the new technologies that have become an
important part of our daily life.
Mr. Robert: Scientific inventions and human discoveries have made this world easier, more interesting and worth
living. However, not all inventions and discoveries can have both positive and negative effects on earth and
humans' life. For instance, inventions like atomic bombs and cigarettes are 100% negative and cause harmful
results.
Part Two:
Journalist: I totally agree with you. My question is:" How can we avoid the negative side of such inventions
especially the new technologies that have become an important part in our daily life”?
Mr. Robert: Well, we might find ways to make our use of technology healthier.
Journalist: That’s really interesting. What solutions would you suggest for that?
Mr. Robert: For instance, I’d recommend recycling plastic products and using electric cars to reduce
environmental pollution.
Journalist: Good point! What else?
Mr. Robert: Eye problems and obesity caused by over watching TV can be solved by wearing computer glasses
and taking breaks regularly.
Journalist: “Yes, I’d be up for that.” and, what about the laziness and social isolation caused by AI (Artificial
Intelligence) including social media and the overuse of robotics…etc
Mr. Robert: Well, I think we shouldn’t use devices at least for one day a week.
Journalist: That’s a good idea. Now, what about the issue of the killing cancer caused by consuming cigarettes?
Mr. Robert: I suggest that governments should ban tobacco products definitely.
Journalist: “Hmm, interesting, but I believe it’s not easy to be achieved. My last question will be about the most
devastating inventions like military weapons including atomic bombs and nuclear weapons. How can we protect our
planet from their terrifying risks?
Mr. Robert: I must confess that it’s not easy to find a solution for such devastating inventions. However, I believe
that eliminating military weapons is the only effective solution to save the earth.
Journalist: “Yeah, you’re right.” Thank you Mr. Robert for the interesting talk. See you in another
episode.

I think ………………………….
While Reading
1. Read the text and check your answers to the previous questions:
Electricity has become a necessity in many different aspects in humans’ life. Electricity occurs when
electrons flow from one place to another within an electrical circuit. Generally, we get electricity from the
conversion of other sources of energy, like coal, gas, oil, nuclear power and other natural sources. However, if
all other methods fail one day, there is a way to generate electricity using a general household groce ry item:
a potato.
To make a battery from organic material, all you need is a potato, two different types of metals (commonly used
metals are zinc and copper).
After preparing the equipment, you will go on to build your very own electrical circuit by following these steps:
1. Insert the two different metals into the potato. The metals should be separated as far as possible from
each other in order to produce higher voltage by allowing greater amount of ions to travel between those
two metals.
2. Attach one end of the wire to one metal (zinc nail) and the other end of that wire to the negative end of
the light bulb.
3. Then connect the wire to the other metal (copper) from one end and the other end to the positive
terminal of the light bulb.
The completion of the circuit will result in generating electricity to light up the bulb.
This experiment can be explained as follows: The potato does not produce the electricity; instead, it acts as a
salt-bridge between the two metals. The metals react with the potato elements: sugar, water and acid. The
metals effectively become electrodes, one positive and the other negative, and electrons flow between the
metals inside the potato, making a small electric current. The electrical current passing through the light bulb is
enough to make it illuminate.
Potato battery experiment is important because it proved that potato can be used as alternative power
resource in remote areas where providing electricity can be a problem. If the potential for potato is carefully
exploited, it may well replace fossil fuels in the future. Adapted from https://www.environmentbuddy.com
