1.2 Use the scenario given to apply some of the 5 steps mentioned above. Tip: Take
note of the rubric and the headings on the rubrics to identify the tasks/ “steps” you
have to complete.

SCENARIO
James is a Grade 7 boy at a primary school in Gauteng. In his Technology class, James
and his friends have been learning about simple mechanisms and how they have been
used to make life easier for people. Mr Brown, James’ Technology teacher, has given
James and his friends a task to design a pedal dustbin to demonstrate the technological
knowledge and to apply their technological skills he taught them in class. These are the
criteria Mr Brown gave to James and his friends:
 The pedal dustbin has to be neat and presentable.
 It has to have 1 or more of the simple mechanisms taught in class.
 The mechanism has to work (lift the lid of the pedal dustbin).
 They have to use recyclable material to make the pedal dustbin.
 They only have a week to make the pedal dustbin.

QUESTION 5

Two girls, Sarah and Tebogo, walk in the veld and climb up a small hill. Suddenly, a
rock comes loose and starts rolling down the hill. It lands on Sarah’s foot, which gets
caught underneath the rock. Tebogo tries to lift the rock, but it is too heavy for her.
She looks around and finds an iron pole. She tries to lift the rock with the iron pole
and it works! Sarah now manages to pull her foot out from underneath the rock.
Tebogo was not strong enough to lift the rock, she used a tool.

5.1 What class of a lever was created by Tebogo when she moved the rock off
Sarah’s foot? (2)

5.2
5.2.1 Draw a simple diagram where you label the 3 parts of the lever looking at the
rock, Sarah’s foot and Teboho moving the rock off Sarah’s foot using the iron pole.
Use the appropriate wording when labelling the parts of a lever. (6)

5.2.2 On your drawing above, indicate where the input and output force will be on the
drawing. (2)

5.3 Does the lever created by Teboho give a mechanical advantage? Motivate your
answer. (2)
