7) Phase Shift Oscillator

The document outlines an experiment to study the operation of an op-amp based RC Phase shift oscillator, detailing objectives, apparatus, and theory behind the circuit. It emphasizes the conditions required for sustained oscillations, including the need for a 180-degree phase shift and sufficient amplifier gain. The procedure includes designing the circuit, assembling it, and observing the output frequency on a CRO, along with a section for observations and conclusions.

EXPERIMENT NO: 7

Title: To study the op-amp based RC Phase shift oscillator.

Objectives:
1) To study what are the requirements to get the sustained oscillations.
2) To study working of RC Phase shift oscillator circuit.
3) To design the RC phase shift oscillator circuit for desired frequency.
Apparatus:
IC 741, Various R & C, components, CRO, Dual Power Supplies etc.

Theory:

The oscillator circuit contents op-amp & three RC coupled N/Ws as feedback circuit
provides that feedback voltage from output that is input of op-amp. The op-amp used in
inverting mode, therefore any signal that appears at the inverting terminal is shifted by 180
at output & additional 180 shift is introduced by cascaded RC network. Thus total phase

shift around loop is 360 i.e. in phase with signal. At some specific freq, when phase shift of
feed Back network is exactly 180 & amp is sufficiently large, circuit will oscillate, at that
freq. This freq is known as freq of oscillation & is given by fo = 1/ 2  6 RC = 0.065/RC.

At this freq gain Av must be at least 29 i.e. RF/ R1 =29. The circuit will produce
sinusoidal waveform of freq ‘fo’ if gain is 29 & total phase shift is 0 for desired frequency
of oscillation. Choose capacitor C & then calculate R. Desired output amplitude however
can be obtained with back to back zener connected at output terminal

Thus, required condition for sustained oscillations is –

1) Phase shift of RC network must be 180 exactly.

2) Gain of amplifier should be sufficiently large.

Procedure:
1) Design the oscillator circuit for desired frequency.
2) Assemble the circuit on the bread board.
3) Switch on the power supplies & observe the output on the CRO.
4) Measure the output frequency & compare its frequency with the designed one.
5) Vary the gain of the oscillators circuit & see the effect on the
Output waveforms.
Observation:
Desired Frequency (Hz) Observed Frequency (Hz)
