PERFORMANCE HAND-BOOK
FOR PILOTS
FOREWORD
This Hand-Book has been designed to be a help / guide to the Line Pilots for calculation of
various parameters before a Flight as well as during a Flight. An effort has been made to
include all calculations that may be required for the conduct of a Flight. Yet it is possible
that some examples may not have been included .
Also extensive references have been made to various manuals and Training material of
AIRBUS. While being grateful to them it is reiterated that as and when any “Revisions”
are issued, changes in data or procedures may become inevitable. Therefore, this
HAND-BOOK should only be used as Training Material. Please note that REVISIONS
upto and including REV-44 have been taken into account in this Hand Book.
All Pilots using this Hand-Book are urged to forward any suggestions or corrections that
will improve this Hand-Book to <Flt Ops Portal>.

10 PRACTICE QUESTIONS 37
38
FLIGHT PREPARATION
TECHNICAL CONDITION OF THE AIRCRAFT
The crew will verify the technical state of the aircraft (deferred defect list), with regard to airworthiness,
acceptability of malfunctions (MEL), and influence on the flight plan.
WEATHER BRIEFING
- Actual and expected weather conditions, including runway conditions for takeoff and climb-out.
- Significant weather enroute, including winds and temperatures.
- Terminal forecasts for destination and alternate airports.
- Actual weather for destination and alternates, for short range flights and recent past weather ,
if available
- Survey of the meteorological conditions at airports along the planned route.
Weather can affect the choice of routing (for example, influence which route is quickest) and the choice of flight
level. The flight crew must also consider the possibility of runways being contaminated at the departure and
destination airfields. The flight crew must also verify ISA deviations and enroute icing conditions, and must
consider the possibility of holding due to weather at the destination.
NOTAMS
The flight crew must examine NOTAMs for changes to routings, unserviceable navaids, availability of runways
and approach aids etc, all of which may affect the final fuel requirement.
In order to prevent the risks of projection of debris towards the trimmable horizontal stabilizer and the elevators,
it is not recommended to takeoff from runways in bad condition (loose surface, under repair, covered with
debris….).
The crew will check the company flight plan for routing, altitudes, and flight time.
The Captain will check the ATC flight plan and ensure that it:
- Is filled in and filed, in accordance with the prescribed procedures,
- It agrees with the fuel flight plan routing.
The crew will check the estimated load figures, and will calculate the maximum allowable
takeoff and landing weights.
-5-
FUEL REQUIREMENTS
Ensure that both the captain and the first officer have verified that the fuel calculation and required fuel
on board are correct and that the figure complies with the applicable regulations.
FUEL TRANSPORTATION
The flight crew MUST check the policy covering the “tankering” of fuel on sectors where there is a favourable
fuel price differential or operational requirement.
Remember that carrying unnecessary extra fuel increases the fuel consumption for that sector and therefore
reduces the economy of the operation (lower flex temperature, more tyre and brake wear, more time in climb
phase, lower optimum flight level etc).
- “SHALL”, “ WILL”, “ MUST” or an action verb in the imperative sense means that the application of
the rule or procedure or provision is mandatory.

Ans. As per the MEL, the aircraft can be dispatched if 1 out of 4 main-wheel brakes is INOP (except for
Narrow R/W operations) after applying Flight Manual PERF PENALTIES in addition to other
technical requirements being met. MEL Page 01-32 P-8 Refers.
Flight Manual PERF PENALTY- Decrement in MTOW & V Speeds is given at ………… MEL 02-32 P- 7 & 8
Step – 1. Calculate Perf Ltd MTOW for Dry R/W and Calm Winds :-
T/O with 68.4 tons possible. Perform T/O with Full Thrust ( TOGA ). Use Config 3.
# Speeds determined without failures and associated with the ATOW may be retained if they are
all lower than those calculated by the method above ( for the MTOW after decrements).
( Refer note on MEL 02-32 P-7 detailed below).
Speeds for 68.4 tons ATOW in Config 3 = 143/143/147 K……. (After applicable corrs) ( Without Failures).
MEL 02.32 P-7 vide Note states :-“ If actual TOW is lower than the MTOW calculated using
above method, the speeds determined without failure and associated with the actual TOW
may be retained provided they are all lower than the speeds calculated using above method.”
Since in the case above, the speeds determined with 68.4 tons wt. without
failures are all NOT lower, therefore retain speeds as determined with the
MEL-MTOW i.e. 126/134/138 K. (For ATOW 68.4 t ).
Ans :- . As per the MEL, the Take Off is permissible with One Pair of Spoilers 1 or 3 ‘INOP’ if Flight Manual
PERFORMANCE PENALTIES are applied and other technical conditions are met. MEL 01-27 P-7
* Apply following decrements to Perf Ltd MTOW & Speeds.
* Weight Decrement 800 Kgs (both Configs )
* Decrease V1 by 1K, Vr & V2 no change MEL 02-27 P-5
Step – 1. Calculate Perf Ltd MTOW for Dry R/W and Calm Winds ( Same as previous Example):-
Note 1. # ATOW is 68.4 tons. Take Off is permitted with TOGA Thrust.
# Optimum Config is Config-1 & Speeds for ATOW 68.4 tons (Without Failure) are
146/146/148 as interpolated from RTOW Chart.
# These speeds be retained as they are all equal to/lower than MEL MTOW speeds
146/ 150/152K.
MEL 02-27 P-5
# Check for min speeds & V2 ≥ Vmu ( For retained speeds i. e. 146/146/148K).
2. # With spoiler 3 Fault, the ALD increases by 10%. Hence compare the revised ALD with LDA.
