Prior Learning: It will be helpful if children can recall multiplication facts up to 10 × 10.

Learning Sequence
Factors Game: Divide the class into two teams. One person from each group picks two Factors Digit Cards for their
team: one tens number, and one ones number. As a group, children calculate the factors of this number and count the
number of factors. The group with the highest number of factors wins one point. Continue the game for a set number
of rounds. The winning team is the team with the greatest points.
Ratio: Introduce the concept of ratio. Ask the children if they have heard the term ‘ratio’ before and how they might
define the word. Use the Lesson Presentation to demonstrate how to write ratio statements using a colon to
separate numbers which represent two (or more) values. Using individual whiteboards, children work with a partner to
write the ratio statement for the drawings on each slide.
Simplest Form Ratios: Introduce the term ‘simplest form.’ Children may already be familiar with this term from their
work on fractions. Call eight children out to the front, six boys and two girls. Ask children what is the ratio of girls
to boys (2:6). Rearrange the children so that there are three boys to one girl. Tell the children that the ratio 2:6 can
also be written as 1:3, and that this is the simplest form. Continue with the slides to reinforce this concept and how
the simplest form can be calculated by dividing both sides of the ratio statement by the highest common factor. On
individual whiteboards, children calculate four simplest form ratios using the examples on the Lesson Presentation.
Work through the answers, demonstrating how to calculate the simplest forms by dividing each side of the ratio by
the highest common factor.
Finding Equivalent Ratios: Use the Lesson Presentation to explain how to calculate equivalent ratios by continuing
the multiple patterns from the starting ratio. Using individual whiteboards, children complete ratio sequences by
continuing multiple patterns.
Introducing Ratio: Children complete the differentiated Introducing Ratio Activity Sheets by writing ratios,
calculating simplest form ratios and completing equivalent ratios by continuing multiple patterns.

Roll It Out: In pairs, children take turns to roll a dice. They explain to their partner what they have learned in the lesson
by following the instructions on the Lesson Presentation.

Masterit
Listit: Children think of real-life situations where we compare two groups, making a list of as many situations as they can think of.
Drawit: Children draw pictures of real-life situations where there are two groups, drawing sets of the different groups and writing the ratio
underneath in its simplest form.
