RECONGRESS 2024 1
WELCOME

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

On behalf of the entire family of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, I want to welcome you
to our 2024 Religious Education Congress!

Our theme this year is “Be Loved,” and I invite you during these days to enter deeply into the
mystery of God’s love for you.

Pope Francis has said: “This is the heart of the Christian faith: God, who is Love, has drawn near
to you, to me, to everyone, in his Son Jesus, and wants to share in your life, your work, your
dreams, and your thirst for happiness.”

Love is the true meaning of our religion. Spreading that love to the ends of the earth is the
Church’s mission.

We can never know why Jesus loves us so much. We can only stand in awe and gratitude, and
accept the gift of his love. We can only ask for the grace to allow his love to transform us, taking
up our own cross and following him; making our own lives a gift of love for him and for others.

In these days of prayer and fellowship, let us open our hearts to grow in wonder at God’s love!

Please pray for me, and I will be praying for you.

I entrust all of us to the tender heart of Our Blessed Mother Mary, may she keep us all in the
mantle of her love.

Most Reverend José H. Gomez

Archbishop of Los Angeles

2 RECONGRESS 2024
WELCOME

RECONGRESS 2024 3
WELCOME

Dear Participants,

It fills me with joy to welcome each of you to the 2024 Religious Education Congress!

The theme of the 2024 Religious Education Congress, Be Loved!, is a daring invitation to expe-
rience God’s unconditional love in every corner of our lives.

Our Lenten journey begins the weekend of RECongress with the beautiful opportunity to ac-
knowledge and accept that we are loved no matter what, as the Psalm of the first Sunday of Lent
remind us: “your compassion and your love are from of old.” This invitation of being loved will
give us the opportunity to not only experience the dignity of being a beloved child of God, but
also will give us the strength to be the reflection of God’s love that offers life and hope to our
families, society, and Church.

Being loved is a basic need that we all claim and paradoxically it is challenging to allow oneself
to be loved. Our weekend together will provide the opportunity to meet people from all over the
world and many other offerings that will melt down our defenses allowing God to love us. Pope
Francis reminds us that “the Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can
feel welcomed, loved, forgiven, and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel.” (Evangelii
Gaudium, 114)

I invite you to deepen in this invitation to Be Loved! and to become a Church where everyone is
loved and encouraged to live the Gospel.

Sr. Rosalia Meza, VDMF

Senior Director of the Office of Religious Education
Archdiocese of Los Angeles

ENGLISH KEYNOTE WITH JESSICA SAROWITZ

Saturday, 7:50 AM | Convention Arena
Many of us seek mentors for guidance in our careers and passions, yet we often overlook the impor-
tance of spiritual mentors. Jessica will share how her pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain
and her connection with her spiritual mentors, especially Sister Maria Rosa Leggol (known as the
'Mother Teresa of Honduras'), helped her recognize love in all its forms and encouraged her to make
giving back a meaningful part of her ongoing journey.

RECOGNIZING LOVE ALONG LIFE’S JOURNEY

Keynote Presenter: Jessica Sarowitz

Many of us seek mentors for guidance in our careers and passions, yet we often over-
look the importance of spiritual mentors. In this inspiring Keynote Address, Jessica
Sarowitz will share how her pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain and her
connection with her spiritual mentors, especially Sister Maria Rosa Leggol (known
as the 'Mother Teresa of Honduras'), helped her recognize love in all its forms and
encouraged her to make giving back a meaningful part of her ongoing journey.

Morning Praise music will be led by Tony Alonso,

Roger Holland and Kate Williams.

SATURDAY EUCHARISTIC LITURGIES - 5:15 PM

words: Do this in memory of me; and fulfilled in his dying on the cross.

RECONGRESS 2024 21
BIENVENIDA

Hna. Rosalia Meza, VDMF

Directora de la Oficina de Educación Religiosa
Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles

ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS
The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious
ENDOWMENT
Education to support the ongoing training and formation of religious education leaders,
particularly by making scholarships available for Directors of Religious Education, Adult
Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers to pursue graduate studies. It is our hope
that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given the
opportunity to receive a Master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies.

Those who registered online could contribute to this Fund, as well as those who made
an additional contribution through mail-in registrations. As of January 11, 337 people
responded with contributions totaling $6,087.03 . We sincerely appreciate and acknowl-
edge their contributions. Because of thoughtful contributions year after year, the Fund
has passed the $1 million-mark and is currently enabled to offer financial assistance to lay
ministers involved in Parish Catechetical Ministry and related areas in Youth, Young Adult
and Adult Formation.
