OBJECTIVES
Teenagers are individuals who are between the ages of 13 and 19. This is the
period where various physical and emotional changes happen. A teen‘s life is
described as a roller coaster, and our topic ‗A Trip through a Teen‘s Mind‘
aims to focus on the various issues faced by a teenager, like pressure and
the weight of expectations, and some easy ways to overcome them.
Our team has agreed upon this topic as it highlights the issues that every
single one of us is going through right now. There are many thoughts that
teenagers can't express, and our project helps to bring them out. We think
this topic would make the readers engaged and would also help us earn
better grades. It would also be easy for us to collect input from many people,
as we don‘t have to look far for our survey respondents, considering every
single student around us is a fellow teenager. This project allows us to
subtly voice out our own problems as teens. Being a teenager is hard, not
everyone gets to live a perfect life and every single issue needs to be voiced
out. This project might also help normalize the issues of teenagers and
extend support to every teen who needs it.
Through this project we expect to know more about teens' behavior and
what they go through inside their heads. We would try to focus on problems
that they are afraid to vocalize and aim to know more about how peer
pressure affects them mentally.

ACTION PLAN
The six of us, Aditya, Prajith, Sandeep, Siddarth, and Thiyanesh of XI-E
decided to team up for this project. We chose the topic, ―A Trip to A
Teenager‘s Mind‖ in alignment with the group members, and got it approved
by our teacher. Then, we framed our objectives and an equal amount of hard
work was put in by every single member of our team. Upon getting the same
approved by our teacher, we began working towards our action plan. Many
sessions of discussion and debates later, we managed to create an idea of
what we will be covering in our project, and how each member of the team
can contribute equally. This action plan will be the final blueprint of our ASL
project.
We aim to break the shell, taboos, and a lot of myths about teens.
Adolescence is a very crucial transition period from childhood to adulthood,
and we want to cover every corner of this journey in our project. We want to
focus on the daily lives of teenagers, their feelings, problems, and concerns.
Together, we plan to bring out almost everything that people of our age are
scared to voice out to limelight. Since we ourselves belong to this age group,
it is quite easy for us to connect with the project and achieve the best
results. In the end, we want this to be an eye opener for all those wondering,
"What is going on inside a teenager‘s mind?"

SURVEY RESULTS
A questionnaire was given out by our team to 50 teenagers. The results of
the survey are as follows.
A majority of the responses state that they are expected to study well. This is
quite natural for a teenager. There is equal division of students juggling
between other common responses. This pie chart gives a clear idea on the
same.
10
This question was added to emphasize how teenage is portrayed in movies
and how it actually is in real life. The child goes through a lot of changes in
this phase, and must learn how to handle and overcome them. 72% of
students admit that it is fun but stressful to be a teenager. The next
majority is for ‗No expectations‘. A meagre 6% of them state that it is
memorable. The pie chart clearly stands dominated by one common answer.
11
4. What are certain things that you wish to voice out but can't?
The survey revealed that 64% of teenagers have never thought about suicide,
indicating a positive mental health trend. However, 24% have considered it
as an option, and 12% occasionally contemplate it. These findings
underscore the importance of addressing mental health concerns and
fostering a supportive environment for teenagers.
The survey unveils that teens are primarily influenced by social media, with
a substantial 50%. This highlights the pervasive impact of online platforms
on their attitudes and behaviors. Friends closely follow at 40%, indicating
the significance of peer relationships in shaping teenage perspectives.
Movies have a modest influence at 6%, while elders hold a 4% sway,
suggesting a comparatively minor role in shaping teen opinions. These
12
findings illuminate the powerful role of digital and social connections in
molding the preferences and choices of today's teenagers.
13
7. Biggest stress?
14
common experience of betrayal among teenagers. In contrast, 18% reported
no such betrayal, suggesting that a notable portion has been fortunate
enough to avoid such negative experiences in their friendships.
15
This question was asked to differentiate teens then from teens now, and
learn about views of the teenagers today on teens those days. A major 33%
said that "technology" is the highlighted difference, indicating how
technological developments and usage of gadgets have made a impact in the
way of living. Pressure and stress follow a close 16%, and the rest feel that
independence, perceptions and mental health are contradicting between
teens then and now.
Social media- the reel platform that has captivated the current young minds
still remains a mystery in determining whether it's a boon or a bane. When
asked the same, more than half, that is 65% of them feel it's both boon and
a bane, depending on how it is used. 17% feel it's a boon as it's a greater
source of information and provides exposure and knowledge. Equally, the
other 17% consider it as a bane, due to the negative impacts caused.
16
12. As a teen, what matters to you the most?
A lot of things excite the young adolescent minds. Knowing what matters the
most among all of those is very important. That was the reason for including
this question. 25% prioritise friends and family, emphasizing no matter what
may be the age or generation, bonds and affection remain play a crucial role.
Studies follow closely with a 22%, clearly highlighting their determination for
academical pursuits. Furthermore, 12% vote for freedom and happiness
above everything, strongly insisting the importance of mental health. And a
meagre 6% express that making good impression and having freedom
matters the most to them.
17
We've heard a lot of myths about teenager. To name a few, we're all aware of
the statements "teens aren't mature enough to take their own decisions" ,
"they are rude and disobey elders" and much more. We asked them their
views on these myths. A bulk 51% considers them invalid, stating that
they're not true. However, 19% of them feel they are valid, followed by 17%
who agree it's partially valid. Interestingly, a 12% of them assure they
haven't heard any such myths.
14. How matured do you think you are? Do you think you should grow
more mentally?
18
Here we see the various ways on how teenagers handle the problems that
are thrown at them. A substantial 31% seek support from elders, to perceive
the situation better. Additionally, 16% analyse & think of ways to resolve the
problem. 19% of them express their emotions, 7% try to distract themselves
and 4% face them boldly.

discovering who they are as individuals.
21
methods helped us delve deeper into the thoughts, emotions, and
experiences that define the adolescent years.
Case studies provided a detailed look into the lives of individual teenagers.
By examining their unique stories and circumstances, we could uncover
patterns and common challenges. For example, one case study focused on a
teenager who struggled with academic pressures and self-esteem issues.
Through this story, we understood how these challenges impact a teenager's
mental state and decision-making.
Podcasts have become a popular platform for discussing the inner workings
of a teenager's mind. These audio programs feature experts, educators, and
teenagers sharing their experiences and insights. Podcasts covered a broad
spectrum of topics, from mental health and relationships to academic
challenges and technology's impact. They provided a convenient way for
us to learn about the issues teenagers face and how to support them
effectively.
22
individuality. Understanding how peer relationships shape their thoughts
and actions is crucial.
Bullying is a pervasive issue that has plagued schools and communities for
generations. While it affects individuals of all ages, teenagers are particularly
vulnerable to its harmful effects. The teenage years are a critical period of
development, and bullying can have a profound and lasting impact on the
physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of teens.
23
How can we identify bullying?
Teenage bullying comprises of a wide range of negative behaviours, including
physical, verbal, relational, and even cyberbullying. It involves a power
imbalance where one person seeks to exert control and dominance over
another, causing emotional or physical harm to the other. The following lists
the common types of bullying found around us.
1. Verbal Bullying:
Verbal bullying involves the use of words to hurt, threaten, or intimidate
others. It often includes name-calling, taunting, teasing, and spreading
rumours. Verbal bullying can have a profound impact on a teenager's
selfesteem and mental health, leading to feelings of worthlessness and
isolation.
2. Physical Bullying
Physical bullying encompasses actions that involve physical harm or the
threat of physical harm. This can include hitting, pushing, kicking, or any
form of physical aggression. Physical bullying can lead to physical injuries
and emotional trauma.
3. Relational Bullying
Relational bullying, also known as social or covert bullying, involves
manipulating relationships to harm others. This may include exclusion,
spreading rumours, and using peer pressure to control or intimidate.
24
Relational bullying can be subtle but can have devastating effects on a
teenager's social life and mental well-being.
4. Cyberbullying
With the advent of technology, cyberbullying has become a growing concern
among teenagers. It involves the use of digital platforms such as social
media, text messages, and emails to harass, threaten, or humiliate others.
Cyberbullying can be particularly insidious, as it often occurs in a virtual
environment where the perpetrator can remain anonymous.
Causes
Before discussing on how to stop this issue, we must analyse the cause of it.
There can be many factors which may lead a teenager to bully others. For
easy understanding, we split them into social, family environmental and
psychological factors.
In some cases, teenagers with low self-esteem tend to bully others to prove
their self-worth to themselves. A deficiency in empathy can make it difficult
for teens to understand the consequences of their actions on others.
25
EFFECTS
Now that we know the causes of bullying, we begin to wonder how bullying
affects the victim. Bullying affects the emotional well-being, mental health
and overall development of the victim.
Teens who are bullied tend to develop physical and psychological health
problems. They often experience physical health problems, such as
headaches, stomach aches, and sleep disturbances. They are also at an
increased risk of developing mental health issues, including depression,
anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Bullying also causes trauma, which can
affect the teenager‘s entire life.
Bullying at school can also affect their academic performance. They tend to
lose focus and are unable to concentrate on studies as their mind is
constantly occupied.
Victims are also socially isolated, and they withdraw from school and social
activities among peers. They find it difficult to form healthy relationships
with their peers, as they are constantly afraid of being judged or bullied.
PREVENTION
Efforts are being taken to prevent bullying by schools, parents, communities
and teenagers themselves. Legal punishments are being enforced by the
government that provide zero tolerance to bullying.
26
encouraged to be actively involved in their children‘s lives, and having open
conversations with them about bullying, so that children can tell their
parents without hesitation if they are getting bullied.
Various support systems are being made available. Counselling and Mental
Health Services are provided for both the victims and the bullies, so that
their emotional and psychological concerns can be addressed. Peer Support
Groups and Mentorship programs help create a sense of belonging and
reduce social isolation among teenagers. Schools can also have student
counsellors, peer mentors and an anti-bullying squad comprising of
students, staff, and parents that constantly monitor the school campus for
any bullying and provide a forum for victims to comfortably voice out their
issues, have action taken against the bullies and maintain records of
bullying events and create a repository which would help in effective
monitoring and control.
27
Bullying, on more severe cases, can also be legally reported for charges of
harassment or assault, and the law ensures justice for the victims.
Sometimes, bullies themselves may experience guilt, shame or regret for
their actions, which in turn affects them emotionally.
TEEN RELATIONSHIPS
It is common for teenagers to get attracted towards the opposite gender.
Hormones play a vital role in this process. Teens intend to explore what is
happening in their body and play with it to find the flow. Getting butterflies
in the stomach and having a crush is quite natural but being aware that
these are very temporal and realizing the fact that they are just
physical infatuations is more crucial. A question that a teen should ask
themselves is ‗If beauty fades and hormones drains out, what is left?!‘
28
“Why are you laughing on phone, is it your boyfriend/girlfriend? Don't get into
relationships, it will spoil your studies!”
“Why are so moody and irritated all the time? Give respect to your elders!
Don’t talk back!”
“Why are you playing on your phone all day long? You are not a child
anymore! Go focus on what you must, instead of wasting time like this!”
Such remarks will only lead to more distress and gradually increases the
gap between the parents and the child. Teenagers may even develop anxiety
and anger issues, which may have a permanent impact on their lives.
Also, they should recognize their child‘s talent and help them grow into their
own individual, unique selves and not force children to become someone
else. Another important thing is to build the teen’s confidence in parents.
Teenagers are bound to stumble, and parents should establish a trust
through constant and proper communication. Teenagers should know that
parents will help them grow and not leave them astray just because they
make mistakes. Teens should know that parents will always support and
protect them, and never be afraid or hide their mistakes, only for it to grow
into bigger potholes.
29
Generation gap also plays a huge role. There should always be talking along
with listening. It is important for parents and teenagers to listen to each
other properly and try to understand where they are coming from. They
should each give the needed space and privacy in order to keep the
relationship flourishing and healthy. Parents should also teach teenagers
to handle their emotions. It is important that children are aware of the
changes occurring in the teenage phase, and how one can handle them
maturely and bloom. Instead of pinpointing their teens‘ mistakes and
underestimating them, parents should teach children and help them
learn.
The word ‗disagreement‘ is such a common occurrence for teens and their
parents. To avoid disagreements, parents should not overreact when
children confide in them, and never reject them directly or start
advising amidst the conversation. A friendly approach would be a better
solution, as this helps the teenager feel comfortable and safe with their
parents. Sharing parents‘ own experiences is often a good way to teach
teenagers. The problem should be dealt with positivity. Teenagers should
be guided towards positive solutions which will help them learn and brace
themselves for future endeavors.
30
It should also be noted that a mutual trust between the parents and the
teenager is present. The teenager must understand what is appropriate for
their age and parents must trust their children and always listen to their
side of the story too. Teenagers should be given only age-appropriate
freedom, and they should be made to understand what is good and bad for
them at this phase. Once the teen knows what they must do at this age and
establish a loving relationship with their family built with the unbreakable
cement of trust, things will start brightening up and they will be able to
direct their focus onto what they‘re working for.
In many rural parts of world, it is very saddening to know that teenage girls
have to use old clothes for their personal hygiene during certain days of the
month, which is extremely unsafe. A lot of teenage boys and girls quit school
to work and earn for the family. Government and other private companies
could take initiatives to offer free and safe products, and financial aid along
with education to teenagers in rural areas.

TEENAGERS - MATURITY LEVEL AND SUICIDAL THOUGHTS
Maturity level in teenagers can vary from one person to another person. It
includes responsible decisions, developing empathy, handling emotions,
exhibiting independent thinking and so on . When it comes to suicidal
thought in teenagers, it‘s crucial to recognize that these thoughts are
serious indication of stress and should never be taken lightly. Stress is the
starting point for suicidal thoughts. Teenagers can avoid stress by listening
to music, handling every situation in calm manner and distracting
themselves by doing things they like.
Depression, dramatic mood change and anxiety are the major warning signs
for a child with suicidal thoughts. Social media affects teens‘ mental health
and also plays a role when it comes to suicidal thoughts. The major negative
aspect of social media is cyber bulling . Parents can also prevent their
children from suicide by talking about the issue and motivating them in a
positive way. Lack of motivation and constant negative mood are the main
reasons for increase in mental health issues.
Colleges and schools have to create mental health awareness programs for
students. Understanding complexity of maturity in teenagers
and recognizing the signs of suicidal thoughts are essential components of
supporting teens‘ mental health. By fostering open communication, providing
access to mental health resources and being proactive in addressing
emotional distress, we can create a supportive environment in which
teenagers feel valued, heard and empowered to seek help when needed.

TEENAGERS – THE BUILDERS OF OUR FUTURE
“Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached!”, quoted Swami
Vivekananda, to the young minds of our nation. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the
great scientist and former president of India dedicated his life to teaching and
training the youth.
Such great personalities have targeted the youth, because these young
communities will rule the word tomorrow. Teenagers are the bridge between
the past and the future. They represent a critical segment of our society,
with over 40 percent of the Indian population being teenagers and youth
who are below the age of 30. India has the largest youth population on the
Earth, and very soon, the country would entirely be run by the youth which
is why India is seen as an emerging superpower. There is a huge role played
by teenagers in nation building and they have a significant influence in
shaping the future.
34
1. Education
Schools should not only focus on academics but also on holistic education
that includes critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and emotional
intelligence that gives a well-rounded approach for better leadership roles for
teenagers.
35
challenges and obstacles. These involvements can also set the foundation for
active citizenship when they take the reins.
Many teenagers are often not scared to voice out for social justice. They
conduct rallies and protests to fight for their rights. Their passion for
equality can drive a positive change in the community. Parents should also
support their efforts to address pressing social issues. Teens have played
significant roles in environmental movements, demanding action in issues
like climate change. The public must listen to their concerns and provide
proper platforms for their voices to be heard. Such young activism shows
that teens, with their energy, sense of justice and power, are passionate
advocates for social change.
3. Technology
36
problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking and real-world application. The
goal of STEM is to prepare students for the rapidly evolving fields of science,
mathematics and technology. STEM provides a holistic understanding of
common issues and problems and allows students to apply theoretical
knowledge to real life situations through experiments and projects. It also
encourages teamwork, improving communication skills of students.
India is a country with a rich culture and tradition. So, there is a need to find
the balance between preserving our culture and creating innovations focused
on the future. Teens must be delicately encouraged to appreciate and protect
our culture, while embracing new innovations.
Neeraj Chopra, India‘s first trach and filed athletic Olympic gold medalist,
has embarked on an inspirational journey to motivate various youngsters
and teenagers to achieve something huge.
37
Various recipients of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar award
2022 are all young teenage achievers. Here are a few of them,
38
Despite this, she has been learning yoga for the last three years
and has participated in a total of over 42 yoga competitions in
which she has won 51 medals.
And the list goes on! India has countless number of teenage achievers who
have proved their worth at a young age and are currently chasing much
bigger challenges. They contribute significantly towards nation building,
creating a future with talented winners in every field.
Teenagers are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are active participants
in the present, with the potential to shape the future of their nations. By
investing in their education, fostering their civic engagement, and providing
opportunities for skill development, societies can utilise the energy and
creativity of teenagers to drive nation building. Recognizing and nurturing
the invaluable contributions of teenagers is essential for building a
prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for all. As a society, we must
empower teenagers to realize their potential as agents of positive change and
partners in nation building. Our future is in responsible hands, we must now
preserve our present.

STUDENT REFLECTION
Sandeep: Our project about what's going on inside a teenager's mind was a
real journey into self-discovery. We found out that teens like us are dealing
with so many things. School, friends, family, and self-esteem are like a big
puzzle in our heads. It made me realize that I'm not alone in feeling this way.
I also learned to appreciate my friends who listen and support me, because
we all need someone to talk to.
Prajith: Exploring the topic "A Trip to a Teen‘s Mind‖ with my group was pretty
cool. We saw that being a teenager isn't just about being moody or
rebellious. We've got dreams and fears, and our heads are spinning with all
these emotions. This project helped me understand myself better and also
made me more patient with my friends when they're going through tough
times.
Aditya: Working on the project about what's inside a teen‘s mind was eye-
opening. It showed me how complex our minds can be. We face so many
challenges, like school and family stuff, and it's not easy. But we also have
big dreams and feelings that we're trying to figure out. This project made me
realize that being a teenager is a rollercoaster, but it's a journey we're all on
together.
Thiyanesh: Our group project on "Inside a Teenager's Mind" was a real eye-
opener. We all worked together to understand the complex world of
teenagers. It was challenging but also fun. We learned that teenagers have a
lot going on in their minds. They face stress from school, peer pressure, and
family. Sometimes, they can be moody and confused. But we also found that
they have dreams and hopes. They want to be heard and understood. This
project taught us to be more compassionate and patient with teenagers. It
was a great learning experience that will help us in our own lives too.
