Introduction
The SMART 6TM Analyzer is designed to provide a rapid direct determination of the moisture, or other volatile
components, of any and all products. Using a combination of microwave and infrared energy, the SMART 6 is able
to accurately analyze samples with moisture content from 0.01-99.99%, as well as samples containing polar or
non-polar solvents.
The SMART 6 consists of an integrated 4 place balance to 0.1 mg sensitivity for continuous weight monitoring
and feedback. SMART 6 utilizes a patented combination of microwave and infrared power, providing the most rapid
and complete drying available for the widest range of sample types. Each system includes an infrared sensor for
determining sample temperature, USB ports for the transference of data or methods, Ethernet ports for network
integration, and a printer option if a paper trail is required. The system is controlled via a 7” TFT-LED glass
capacitance touchscreen interface which can accommodate a hierarchy of user logins to protect data and methods
and maintain CFR compliance, and is available in multiple languages.
Samples are analyzed by first being weighed onto one or two CEM glass fiber samples pads, then heated according
to the optimized method parameters, using a combination of the one or both heating sources until the sample
stops volatilizing. Results are automatically calculated to provide the final result which is stored in the system for
future review. Results can be statistically analyzed by method, date, time, or user on the SMART 6 or transmitted
to a LIMS network for real-time data analysis.
Introduction 1
Safety
Safety Notations
This manual uses three safety alert words at points in the documentation where the user should be aware of
potential hazards. The safety alerts are shown in color-coded boxes. The three words–NOTE, CAUTION, and
WARNING–indicate differing levels of observation or action as described below:
NOTE
A NOTE is intended to provide emphasis of procedures that may be misinterpreted or overlooked, or to
otherwise clarify confusing situations.
CAUTION
A CAUTION is intended to provide essential information and to emphasize procedures which, if not strictly
followed, may result in improper instrument operation.
WARNING
A WARNING is intended to emphasize dangerous or hazardous conditions which may result in personal
injury to the user and damage or destruction of the instrument.
Safety measures have been installed in the system, ensuring safety and confidence for users. Three interlock
switches are utilized to monitor the proper sealing of the system to avoid any possibility of microwave leakage.
Flame detection with infrared feedback has been integrated to detect excessive temperature and immediately
render the instrument inoperable. If the system is used in a manner not specified by CEM Corporation, these
protection devices may be impaired.
While the SMART 6 contains numerous safety protocols to protect the end users, certain dangerous situations
can arise due to improper handling of hazardous samples and materials. It is critical to the prolonged use of the
instrument and the safety of the user that these risks are handled in a safe and responsible manner.
WARNING
Samples that can be considered flammable, corrosive, poisonous, or explosive must be discussed with
the Process Applications group at CEM Corporation prior to analysis in a SMART 6 analyzer. Failure to
obtain approval from CEM will void any warranty or service agreement, but more importantly can create a
dangerous testing environment.
Analyzing solvents or products containing harmful volatiles requires connection of an exhaust hose to
the exhaust assembly on the rear of the instrument and leading to an approved fume containment or
ventilation system.
2 Safety
Beyond validating testing parameters, proper handling of dangerous materials must be followed based on
the SDS of the material to further ensure a safe testing environment.
Samples which have just been tested should be given adequate time to cool, based on the heat-retention
properties of the sample.
The cover of the SMART 6 will close on its own once it falls below a certain angle. Keep hands and tools
clear of the SMART 6 cavity when closing the cover.
Once the cover is closed, do not attempt to place any tools or materials in the cavity while an analysis is
being performed.
Notice
The following precautions should be observed to avoid possible exposure to excessive microwave energy:
• Do not tamper with the safety interlocks. The SMART 6 is equipped with three safety interlocks which prevent
the instrument from producing microwave power if the cover is open.
• Do not place any object between the cavity and the cover or allow soil or cleaner residue to accumulate on
sealing surfaces.
• Do not operate the instrument if it is damaged. It is particularly important that the instrument cover close
properly and that there is no damage to the cover (bent), hinges and latch (broken or loosened), or sealing
surfaces.
• The instrument should be adjusted or repaired only by qualified service personnel.

Sample Analysis
Proper product sampling and preparation are critical to achieving optimal accuracy and precision using the SMART
6. Each sample has a unique composition, and therefore may require a unique preparation and application process
along with an individual method specific to that sample type. The SMART 6 has been developed to remove many
different variables that can affect results, but the guidelines below should be followed to optimize each analysis.
Sampling
Proper sampling of any product type is necessary for a rapid analysis that accurately represents the entire
production batch or line. Many standard procedures have been developed specific to each sample type by various
agencies such as AOAC, USDA, or ASTM. Reference each agency for the correct procedure prior to moving forward
with analysis on the SMART 6.
Preparation
Sample preparation should be practiced to ensure that a homogeneous sample is being analyzed. As with any
chemical analysis, a homogeneous sample leads to a more representative test and better results when comparing
duplicate results or reference chemistry. Sample preparation can entail physical or chemical changes to the
sample to improve analysis.
Weight
Consistent sample weight helps ensure precision and accuracy. While sample size can vary from 1.0 grams to 25
grams depending on the type of product being tested, repeatability within the same sample is important to avoid
burning or under-drying of a sample. All methods require inputting the sample weight range during the development
process, and this range is clearly displayed during every test to assist the user in sample weight consistency.
Application
Also known as the sample spread technique, the application of a sample to the glass fiber sample pads is equally
important in achieving optimal results. The SMART 6 system uses different sample spread techniques based on
the viscosity and moisture content of the sample.
CAUTION
Not following proper sample preparation and spread techniques can lead to a reduction in precision,
inaccurate results, or even damage the system.
Sample Analysis 19
WARNING
Improper sample preparation and spread techniques can create an unsafe testing environment due to fire
or volatiles in the cavity.
• Pipette – For highly absorbent, high moisture samples (>85% moisture), pipette the sample onto the center of
the top sample pad. The sample will fully absorb into the pad within a few seconds, after which the analysis can
begin.
• Pipette, cover, and press – For slightly less absorbent products that still have a high moisture content, pipette
the product onto the center of the top sample pad. Cover the sample with the second sample pad to fully cover
the product. Gently use the sample press to spread the sample thinly and evenly between the two pads
• Mound, cover, and press – For solid and semi-solid products, use a spatula to place the correct sample weight
on the center of the top glass fiber sample pad while it is still on the balance pan. Remove the pad and sample
from the balance pan. Cover the sample with the second sample pad and use the sample press to spread the
product thinly and evenly. Ensure that no product has pressed from between the two sample pads.
• Powders – Use a template or spread the sample thin and evenly over 75% of the pad.
• For sample specific spread techniques, refer to the method notes.

Method - Create, Edit and Delete
The SMART 6 is supported by the expert application team at CEM Corporation, and this team has collected a
library of methods to make method development and validation easier and faster. If there is a method in the library
that matches the description of the sample being analyzed, the method can be downloaded to a USB flash drive
and imported into the SMART 6. For instructions for importing, refer to the “Importing and Exporting” section of
this manual.
Unique methods can be developed on the instrument. One Touch method development uses determined categories
of preprogrammed parameters to easily develop and adjust a method. If the categories provided do not optimize
sample results, use the Classic Method development to obtain the parameters within the categories. Prior to
creating a new method, contact the CEM Corporation Process Applications Group at (800) 726-3331 or email us at
[email protected].

External Database and Networks
The SMART 6 is designed to send data to different databases located on external servers or computers. This
allows users to automatically store data on their own managerial network, integrate SMART 6 with other process
control equipment for improved control, and obtain and review results from a mobile platform or remote.
Setup
1. Using the available ports in the rear of the instrument, connect one end of a USB-TypeB to USB-TypeA cable to
the second USB Type B port in the back of the SMART 6 (See below). Connect the other end of the cable to a
computer that is connected to the network or database that will store the SMART 6 results.
3. Select Data, then ensure Serial Output is set to ON. The system will now export all data after each test to the
designated LIMS network or database in an ASCII format. The user can also choose which fields to output by
toggling each field ON or OFF.
• CEM Communicator requires that the first 5 lines be turned ON.

SMART 6 Maintenance
The SMART 6 is designed for durability and is intuitive enough to be used on a production floor as well as in a
laboratory setting. Therefore, there are relatively few maintenance procedures for the SMART 6 as compared to
other moisture/solids analyzers. CEM Corporation offers multiple service contracts to enhance the longevity of the
instrument as well as to reduce down time.
Routine Maintenance
Maintaining a clean SMART 6 during day-to-day usage is one of the best ways to reduce down time and ensure
proper and accurate testing.
Daily
• Turn the instrument off. Clean the SMART 6 cavity using paper towels and a household cleaning solution or soap
and water. Use caution to avoid wetting or spraying the touchscreen interface (although it is waterproof) or the
cavity openings for the cover latch and balance stem.
•
Weekly
• Remove the infrared and electronics filters and clean them using pressurized air or water. If washing the filters,
ensure that they are completely dry prior to installing them in the instrument.
• The infrared filter is accessed by removing the instrument front cover which is secured with magnets. Using
a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two (2) screws securing the white filter bracket. Slide the bracket out.
Remove and clean the filter.
• The electronics filter is located below the touchscreen. The drawer securing the filter is held in place by magnets.
Slide the drawer out to remove and clean the filter.
• Inspect the cavity intake filter on the side of the magnet and the ports and fans in the back of the instrument for
excessive buildup. Use a pressurized air source or dry towel to remove any dust or particulate from these areas.
NOTE
See “Instrument Overview” to locate filters.
Monthly
• Balance Calibration
• The SMART 6 is equipped with an internal high precision 4-place analytical balance to monitor and calculate
sample weight. To ensure the balance is performing correctly, regular calibration and validation should be
performed.
• Following the procedure outlined in this manual, calibrate the balance using a certified traceable weight. When
the calibration is complete, the calibration can be verified by selecting any method on the system, following the
Tare procedure with an empty balance pan, and placing a 10g certified weight on the balance and confirming that
it is 10.0000 +/- 0.001g.
•
Annually
• Change the SMART 6 Screen Protector, PN 192815, if applicable.
• The cover and cavity of the SMART 6 are designed for durability and reliable operation in laboratory and
production floor conditions. External radiation checks are performed on the instrument at several points in the
manufacturing process to ensure that microwave leakage is only a fraction of that permitted by U.S. law (5 mW/
62 SMART 6 Maintenance
cm2).The instrument is equipped with a safety interlock system which stops the generation of microwave energy
when the instrument cover is not securely closed. If the interlock system fails, a monitoring mechanism will blow
the fuse through which power is supplied to the magnetron, rendering the microwave power system inoperable.
• To verify that the cover is sealing and the interlock system is working properly, the SMART 6 should be routinely
tested for microwave leakage. To test for leakage, operate the instrument at 100% power for five (5) minutes.
While it is operating, use a federally approved microwave leakage detector such as the Holaday Model HI-1500
and measure the microwave leakage around the cavity and at the fan grill. Leakage should not exceed 5 mW/
cm2. If the instrument shows excessive microwave leakage, do not attempt further operation. Contact the CEM
Service Department or the nearest CEM subsidiary or distributor.
• Microwave test meters are available from CEM Corporation. CEM does not recommend use of inexpensive
meters available in electronics stores because they lack the necessary sensitivity to properly test an instrument
for microwave leakage.
• IntelliTemp Calibration
• Sample temperature is controlled by CEM’s trademark IntelliTemp process. In order for IntelliTemp to function
properly and ensure the most accurate results possible, the IR sensor should be calibrated and validated.
IntelliTemp calibration can be performed during a preventive maintenance visit by a certified CEM Service
Technician, or the calibration device can be purchased from CEM.
• When performing the calibration, follow the instructions included with the calibration device to ensure that the
SMART 6 is reading the temperature accurately.
• IntelliTemp calibration is included in the annual service contract.
WARNING
Failure to perform the necessary maintenance to keep the SMART 6 clean and operational can lead to a
reduction in precision, inaccurate results, or damage the system, creating an unsafe testing environment
due to fire or volatiles in the cavity.
