Quarter 2 – Module 6

Dividing Decimal Numbers

This Self Learning Module (SLM) was designed and written with you in mind to help you master
the lesson on Visualizing Division of Decimals Using Pictorial Models, Dividing Decimals with
up to 2 Decimal Places, Dividing Whole Numbers with Quotients in Decimal Form and
Differentiating of Terminating and Repeating Decimal Numbers. The scope of this learning
material focuses on the many different learning situations. Moreover, the language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners. The lessons are also arranged following
the standard sequence of the course. Hence, the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module contains:

Lesson 6: Dividing Decimal Numbers

It is divided into sub-lessons namely:
Lesson 6.1- Visualizing Division of Decimals Using Pictorial Models

Lesson 6.2- Dividing Decimals with up to 2 Decimal Places

Lesson 6.3- Dividing Whole Numbers with Quotients in Decimal Form
Lesson 6.4- Differentiating of Terminating and Repeating Decimal Numbers

After going through this SLM, you are expected to:

1. visualize division of decimals using models;
2. divide decimals by whole numbers;
3. divide whole numbers with quotients in decimal form; and
4. differentiate terminating and repeating decimals.

Dividing Decimal Numbers

Lesson 6.1: Visualizing Division of Decimals using Pictorial Models

Here is the problem to study.
A piece of cardboard that can cover 0.40 square units was cut into pieces that can cover 0.08
square units each. Into how many pieces was the cardboard cut?
Picture of the cardboard divided into 100 blocks

One square unit. Shaded portion is 0.40 Shaded portion showing

Illustrated by unit or 40/100 of the 0.08 unit or 8/100 of the
100/100 blocks whole square unit whole square unit

Looking at the illustration, we can see that when 40/100 is divided by 8/100 there are 5 groups.
Thus, forty hundredths divided by eight hundredths is equal to 5 or (0.40 ÷ 0.08 = 5)

Therefore, 0.40 ÷ 0.08 = 5

Answer: The cardboard was cut into 5 pieces.

Explain:
Division of decimals can be visualized using a graphical picture of 100/100 being shaded
into smaller parts.
How will you divide decimals by decimals?
When dividing the decimals by decimals, change the divisor to a whole number. To do this,
multiply both the divisor and dividend by a power of 10. Then, divide as with whole numbers.
Reminder:
When multiplying by powers of ten, move the decimal point to be right as many places as the
number of zeroes in the power of ten.

3
Application:
Levy bought 0.15m of ribbon. She cut into pieces measuring 0.03m each. How many pieces
of ribbons was she able to cut?
Solution: Visualize 0.15÷0.03=N.

÷ =
5

0.15 0.03
Answer: She was able to cut 5 pieces of ribbon.

Lesson 6.2: Dividing Decimal with Up to 2 Decimal Places

Have you experienced going around at the grandstand?

How many kilometers did you walk or jog?
Study the problem below.
Karen jogs at the grandstand every day. If she jogs 0.95 kilometers in 0.25 hours, what was
her speed?
How will you find the answer to this problem?
Let us get the speed of Karen as she jogs. Remember, to get the speed, we will divide the
distance by the time spent.
Numbers of kilometers he jogs every day -- 0.95km
Numbers of hours he jogged every day -- 0.25hours
Step 1. Move the decimal point of the divisor two places to the right as well as the decimal
point of the dividend, the same places as you move the decimal point of the divisor
to make both a whole number. (See illustration.)

0.25 0.95 0.25 0.95. 25 95.0

Step 2. Divide. Continue dividing until the difference is equal to zero.
3.8 Quotient
Divisor 0.25 - 95.0 sDividend
75 0
- 20 0
20 0
0
Step 3. Check: To check multiply the quotient and the divisor. The answer must be equal
to the dividend.
3.8 1 decimal place
× 25
190
+ 76
95.0 Move one decimal place to the left
Answer: Therefore, Karen's current speed in jogging daily is 3.8km/hr.

4
Reminder
To divide a decimal, change the divisor into a whole number. Multiply both the divisor and the
dividend by the same power of 10 or simply move the decimal places to the right until the
divisor becomes a whole number. Then, proceed to division.

Example 2
Marivic has 0.64 meters of cloth to be made into hand towels. Each hand towel measures
0.2 meters. How many hand towels can she make?
Step 1: Multiply the divisor by 10 to make it a whole number.
0.2 x 10= 2
Multiply the dividend by 10 to it a whole number also.
0.64 x 10 = 6.4
Step 2. Write a decimal point in the dividend and a zero in the ones place of the
decimal. 3.
2 6.4
Step 3. Divide. Continue dividing until the difference is equal to zero.
3.2
2 - 6.4
6
4
- 4
0
Step 4. Check. To check, multiply the quotient and divisor, the answer must be equal
to the dividend.
3.2 1 decimal place
× 2
6.4 Move one decimal place to the left
Answer: Therefore, Marivic can make 3.2 hand towels.

Application:

Read and analyze the problem.

To divide a decimal by a whole number, place the decimal point in the quotient directly above
the decimal point in the dividend. Divide decimals like you do with whole numbers.

Explain:
A repeating decimal is a number that eventually takes on a repeating pattern of digits after
its decimal point that will continue forever or it will not end while the terminating decimal has
a set or finite amount of numbers after the decimal point.

Application:
Read and solve the problem:
