Lesson Plan - MEANMEDIANMODEdocx

The lesson plan focuses on teaching students the concepts of mean, median, and mode, including their definitions, calculations, and real-life applications. It includes various activities such as group work, discussions, and assessments to reinforce understanding. Students will also complete assignments that require them to research and create their own datasets.

Lesson Plan: Mean, Median, and Mode

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Define mean, median, and mode.

2. Calculate the mean, median, and mode of a given set of numbers.

3. Differentiate between mean, median, and mode and identify their uses in real-life situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Measures of Central Tendency – Mean, Median, and Mode

Mathematics Concept:

 Mean (Average): Sum of all values divided by the number of values.

 Median: Middle value when data is arranged in order.

 Mode: Most frequently occurring value in a dataset.

Materials:

 Whiteboard and marker

 Printed handouts or visual aids

 Number cards (for group activity)

 Calculator (optional)

References:

 Mathematics textbook

 Online resources on statistics

III. PROCEDURE

A. Motivation (Engagement)

1. Ask students:

o "If I asked you to find the ‘typical’ score of a class in a test, how would you do it?"

o "Have you heard of the terms mean, median, and mode before?"

2. Quick Poll:
o Have students guess the most common age in their classroom and compare it later with
actual data.

B. Lesson Proper (Exploration & Explanation)

1. Definition and Formula

Measure Definition Formula

Mean The sum of all values divided by the

Mean = (Σx) / n
(Average) number of values.

- If n is odd, Median = middle number.

The middle value when arranged in
Median - If n is even, Median = (middle two numbers) ÷
ascending order.
2.

- A dataset may have one mode, more than one

Mode The most frequently occurring number.
mode, or no mode.

2. Step-by-Step Calculation

Example Dataset: 5, 8, 3, 8, 9, 6, 8, 10, 12

 Mean: (5 + 8 + 3 + 8 + 9 + 6 + 8 + 10 + 12) ÷ 9 = 7.66

 Median: Ordered dataset → 3, 5, 6, 8, 8, 8, 9, 10, 12 → Middle value = 8

 Mode: The number that appears most frequently = 8

C. Activity (Elaboration & Application)

1. Group Work:

o Distribute different sets of numbers to groups.

o Have each group calculate the mean, median, and mode of their dataset.

2. Real-Life Application Discussion:

o How do businesses use mean (e.g., average sales)?

o Why is median used in income statistics?

o Where is mode useful (e.g., most common shoe size in a store)?

D. Generalization (Evaluation)

1. Ask students:
o "How do we find the mean, median, and mode?"

o "When is each measure most useful?"

2. Exit Ticket:

o Solve a small problem: Find the mean, median, and mode of 4, 7, 8, 10, 10, 12, 15.

IV. ASSESSMENT (Evaluation)

Assessment Type Description

Quiz Multiple-choice and problem-solving questions

Activity Participation Accuracy in group work

Homework Find the mean, median, and mode of daily temperatures for a week

V. ASSIGNMENT

 Research an example where the median is more useful than the mean (e.g., income statistics).

 Create your own dataset (10 numbers) and compute its mean, median, and mode.
