Inverses

Part 1: Investigate with Desmos. Use Desmos to get a graph of all three equations on one grid for each
problem and sketch the results below.
1. 2. Y1 = x
Y1 = x Y2= x2 {x > 0} (Note: These brackets restrict the domain in
Y2 = (1/5)x + 5 Desmos.)

Y3 = 5(x -5) Y3 = x

3. Y1 = x 4. Y1 = x
Y2 = x2 {x < 0} Y2 = x3
Y3 = − x Y3 = 3 x

5. Each of the Y2 and Y3 functions are inverses of each other. What can you say is true about functions
that are inverses of each other, graphically?
6. Graph the 3 functions on the same x-y NOTES ABOUT INVERSES
coordinate plane. (Without Desmos.) The Idea: An inverse function, f-1(x), “undoes” what f(x)
a. the line y = x does to its input.
b. f (x) = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 5), (4, 7), (5,11)} This Means: If you plug a value into f(x), then take that
output and plug it into f-1(x), the result will be the
c. f −1 (x) = {(2,1), (3, 2), (5, 3), (7, 4), (11, 5)}
original input value.
EXAMPLE: f(x) = 3x – 5 f-1(x) = (x +5) /3
f(11) = 33 – 5 = 28
f-1(28) = (28 + 5) /3 = 11
Another way to say this is: f-1(f(x)) = x

Rule: To find the inverse of f(x),

a) Rename f(x) with “y”
b) Switch x with y in equation
c) Solve for y

Facts:
• f(x) and f-1(x) are reflections of each other over
the line y = x
• If f(x) and g(x) are reflections of each other over
the line y = x, then f(x) and g(x) are inverses of

coordinates? • Domain of f(x) = range of f-1(x) AND range of
f(x) = domain of f-1(x)
• A function must pass the horizontal line test for
its inverse to be a function. That is, a function
must be one-to-one for its inverse to be a
function.
• Two functions f and g are inverses of each
other if and only if f (g(x)) = x and g( f (x)) = x .

Practice.
1. Given f (x) = 2x − 4 , find f-1(x), and graph f(x) and f-1(x) on the axes below.

Find:

f(2) = ________________

f-1(0)=_______________

f(-1)=_______________

f-1(-6)=______________

2. Find p −1 (7) given p(x) = +
9 4.

3. Use the definition of inverse to show that f (x) = 5 − 3 and g(x) = 5x + 3 are inverses.

4. Are f (x) = 4 − and g(x) = 3x + 4 inverses? Why or why not?

5. Given the graph of y = m(x) , graph y = m −1 (x) on the same set of axes.
