INDIAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (ILA)

The year 1933 happens to be the most significant year in the history of Library and
Information Science in India. It was September 13, 1933 when Indian Library Association
was formally formed at the First All India Library Conference at Calcutta.

Indian Library Association since its inception has provided a wide variety of services and
programs to its members and also others, who seek technical support or advice. The three
components, namely The Council, The Executive Committee and the Sectional Committees
are responsible for Policy making and the execution of the Programmers of ILA.

The office of ILA was housed in the Imperial Library at Calcutta for the initial 12
years since 1933. It was shifted to Delhi in 1946 and remained in the University of Delhi till
September 1953. Thereafter, it shifted back to Calcutta. In August 1964, the office moved to
Delhi again and was housed in the Building of Delhi Public Library. An extra-ordinary
General Body Meeting held on May 24, 1970 made a change in the constitution to make
Delhi/New Delhi as the permanent headquarter of the Association. Now the office of the
Association is housed in its own one room flat located in a commercial building in North
Delhi.

The main objectives of the association are:

 Promoting library movement in the country.


 Developing Library and Information Science education.
 Training and research, betterment of library personnel.
 Cooperation at the national and international levels.
 Promotion of standards, norms, services and guidelines.

Functions and Activities:

The functions and activities that are performed by the Indian Library Association can
be grouped in to following categories.

a) Act as a Driving Force: The association takes up with the state governments the
issue of enacting library legislation in order to development public library system.
b) Development of the Profession: Indian library association has been pursuing with
the government, UGC and other concerned agencies at all levels on matter relating to
better salary, grades, service conditions and status of the library professionals.
c) Undertaking of projects: ILA undertook compilation of ‘Union catalogue of
periodicals in the libraries of South Asia’. Another project is currently being
implemented by ILA is making a ‘Directory of Asian Journals’.
d) Publication: Indian library association publishes several publications related with
library and information science. Some of them are Journal of Indian library
Association, ILA Bulletin, ILA Newsletter etc.
e) Seminars, Workshops and training Programme: It holds All India Library
Conference annually. Besides the association also arranges lectures, round table
discussions, several training programme in computer application in libraries etc. for
library professionals.
f) Cooperation: For betterment of libraries and library profession, ILA has cooperation
with various international and national level organizations like IFLA, UNESCO etc.

The Indian Library Association also recognizes excellence and innovation in


the field of librarianship through awards and honors that celebrate the achievements
of outstanding library professionals. By acknowledging exemplary contributions to
the field, the ILA aims to inspire others to strive for excellence and drive positive
change in the library community.

In conclusion, the Indian Library Association plays a vital role in promoting


the growth, development, and sustainability of libraries and information services in
India. Through its advocacy, education, and outreach efforts, the ILA serves as a
catalyst for positive change and innovation in the field of librarianship, ensuring that
libraries continue to thrive as vital hubs of knowledge and information in the digital
age.
