Course Description (From the CMO)
A professional course common to all civil engineering students designed to provide fundamental
concepts, principles, and theories in the structural strength analysis and design of steel elements in a
structure.

Course Outline
SCHEDULE TOPIC
Week 1
1. Introduction of the course
2. Familiarization of various structural shapes
Week 2 - 6 3. Analysis and design of members for bending
3.1 Factors affecting the allowable bending stress
3.2 Compact, non-compact, slender sections in bending
3.3 Lateral unbraced length of flexural members
3.4 Moment resisting capacity of beams
3.5 Nominal bending, plastic bending strength
3.6 ASD and LRFD for bending
Week 7 - 9 4. Shear strength of structural member
4.1 Allowable shear stress, allowable shear strength
4.2 Nominal shear strength
4.3 ASD and LRFD of structural elements for shear
Mid-term Examination
Week 10 -12 5. Analysis and design for axial compression
5.1 Euler’s critical load, critical stress
5.2 End conditions and slenderness ratio
5.3 Code provisions for allowable compression stress
5.4 Column built-up sections, evaluation of allowable concentric load
5.5 ASD and LRFD of axially-loaded compression members
Week 13 - 14 6. Combined axial and flexural loading
6.1 Investigation of Column adequacy under combined loading
6.2 Design of columns under combined loading
7. Analysis and design for axial tension
Week 15 - 16 7.1 Gross area, net area, effective net area for bolted/ riveted connections
7.2 Allowable tensile strength , ultimate tensile strength
7.3 ASD and LRFD methods
Week 17 - 18 8. Connections:
a. Riveted/Bolted
b. Welded

Final Examination

Course Requirements:
1. Must take and pass the major examinations (Midterm and Final Examination)
2. Must take and pass the activity/assessment
3. Must submit required project such as: Compilation of design computations and drawings.
