EARLY INTRODUCTION OF ENGLISH IN THE PHILIPINES
The spread of English in the Philippines is frequently framed within its colonial history,
especially during the American colonial era (1898-1946). But, the first introduction of English
is claimed to be during the Spanish colonial period (1565-1898).
Spanish became the dominant language of the new regime and also became the primary
language of governance and education during this period. The Spanish clergy was heavily
involved in educational activities (where it presented religious instruction, primarily in
Spanish), establishing a foundation for future linguistic developments.
However, as English gradually became the most widely used language throughout the world,
some groups, like traders and missionaries from England and other English-speaking
countries, began to utilize it as well. However, this earlier contact was negligible until the
subsequent American presence. English only became prevalent in the Philippines during the
American colonial period. This transition from the historical hegemony of Spanish to English
has elicited socio-political shifts that each have its permanent inscribing to Filipino identity
and culture.
