Identifying a Relation if It is Function or Not

This document is a lesson module focused on identifying whether a relation is a function. It defines key concepts such as relations, functions, domain, and range, and introduces the Cartesian coordinate system. The module also includes activities for learners to practice determining if given sets of relations represent functions.

LESSON 1

(Week 1)

IDENTIFYING IF A RELATION IS FUNCTION OR NOT

The learner…
1. Define a relation and function.
2. Cite the ways on how to know if a relation is function or not.

Before you begin with the study of this topic, you are advised to make sure
that you are free from all distractions as all the principles here have to be fixed
firmly in your mind. Read the instructions below as these will help as you engage in
your self-study.

 Follow carefully all the instructions indicated in this module.

 Prepare all the materials needed like pen, paper, ruler, and graphing
paper.
 Take note of important key concepts.
 At the end of the discussion, activities are provided.
 You may ask your parent’s help in dealing with your study.
 If you want your teacher may help you with the lesson.
 In case you want to clarify something, your teacher is here to guide you.

This module is intended for learners who wish to continue learning at home
due to the present pandemic.

Learners should recall the topics in Looking Back as this will make you
proficient in identifying the location of the values of x and y. You will determine if a
relation is function or not as you go along through the module.

The Rectangular Coordinate System

A Cartesian plane is a coordinate system that specifies each point uniquely in

a plane by a pair of numerical coordinates.

René Descartes
 Cartesian mathematics was invented by (and is named after) French
philosopher, physicist, physiologist, and mathematician
René Descartes, 1596 - 1650.

Ordered pair
a pair of numbers, written as (x, y), that represents a point on a coordinate grid.
X-axis
the horizontal number line on a coordinate grid.
Y-axis
the vertical number line on a coordinate grid
•The first number in the pair is called :
– x-component
– x-coordinate
– independent variable
– Abscissa
– Input
– It tells the number of units to move
on the x-axis; that is, right or left.

•The second number in the pair is called:

– y-component
– y-coordinate
– dependent variable
– Ordinate
– Output
– It tells the number of units to move on the y-axis; that is up or down.

Figure 1: Cartesian Plane

A relation is a set of ordered pairs. Every value of x corresponds to a unique

value of y.
The domain is the set of all x values in the relation.
The range is the set of all y values in the relation.
These are the x values written in a set from smallest to largest.

This is an example of relation.

{(2,3), (-1,5), (4,-2), (9,9), (0,-6)}

These are the y values written in a set from smallest to largest

domain = {-1,0,2,4,9} range = {-6,-2,3,5,9}
A function is a special type of relation in which each element of the domain is
paired
with exactly one element in the range.
A mapping shows how each member of the domain is paired with each member in
the range.

Examples of Function

Figure 2 Figure 3

Examples of Not a Function

State the domain and range of the relation shown in the graph. Is the relation a
function?

The relation is:

{ (-4, 3), (-1, 2), (0, -4), (2, 3), (3, -3) }
The
Figure 4 Figure 5

domain is:
{ -4, -1, 0, 2, 3 }
The range is:
{ -4, -3, -2, 3 }
Each member of the domain is paired with exactly one member of the range, so this
relation is a function.

Figure 6

You can use the vertical line test to determine whether a relation is a function.
Figure 7
A relation is a function if there is one to one correspondence. Graph them and
test if by using the vertical line test. If it crosses the graph more than once, it's not
a function.

ACTIVITIES

Determine whether each set of relation represents a function or not.

1. {(0,2), (1,3), (2,4), (3,5), (4,6)}
2. {(0,2), (0,4), (0,6), (0,8), (0,10)}

Y 3 6 9 12 15

4.
