1. Consider the base plate of a 1200 W household iron that has a thickness of L = 0.5 cm, base area of A = 300 cm 2, and thermal
conductivity of k = 15 W/m °C. The inner surface of the base plate is subjected to uniform heat flux generated by the resistance
heaters inside, and the outer surface loses heat to the surroundings at T ∞ = 20°C by convection. Taking the convection heat
transfer coefficient to be h = 80 W/m 2 °C and disregarding heat loss by radiation, obtain an expression for the variation of
temperature in the base plate, and evaluate the temperatures at the inner and outer surfaces. [To = 533°C, TL = 520°C]
2. A plane wall is a composite of two materials, A and B. The wall material A has uniform heat generation qg = 1.5 × 106 W/m3, kA =
75 W/m.K, and thickness LA = 50 mm. The wall material B has no heat generation with k B = 150 W/m.K and thickness L B = 20
mm. The inner surface of material A is well insulated, while the outer surface of material B is cooled by a water stream with T ∞ =
30°C and h = 1000 W/m 2.K. Determine the temperature of the insulated surface and the temperature of the cooled surface.
[140°C, 105°C]
3. Consider a 20 mm thick plate with uniform heat generation of 80 MW/m 3. The left and right faces are kept at a constant
temperature of 160°C and 120°C respectively. The plate has a constant thermal conductivity of 200 W/m K. Determine (a) the
expression for temperature distribution in the plate, (b) the location and the value of maximum temperature, and (c) the rate of
heat flux (i) at the left face (ii) at the right face (iii) at the plate center. [5 mm, 165°C, -0.4 W/m2, 1.2 W/m2, 0.4 W/m2]
4. Consider a 2 m high and 0.7 m wide bronze plate whose thickness is 0.1 m. One side of the plate is maintained at a constant
temperature of 600 K while the other side is maintained at 400 K. The thermal conductivity of the bronze plate can be assumed to
vary linearly in that temperature range as k(T) = k0(1+βT) where k0 = 38 W/m K and β = 9.21 × 10-4 K-1. Assuming steady one-
dimensional heat transfer, determine the rate of heat conduction through it. [155 kW]
5. Let for a plane wall of 30 cm thick. The thermal conductivity of the material is given by, K = 200 – 50X W/m K, where x is in
meter. The two ends of the plane wall are maintained at 450°C and 35°C respectively. Find the steady one dimensional heat flux
through the wall and the temperature distribution. [266.156 kW]
6. A truncated solid cone is of circular X-section and its diameter is related to axial co-ordinate by an expression of the form D = ax
(3/2)
, where a = 1 m(-1/2) and x is any distance from the top of the cone. The sides of the cone are well insulated while the top and
bottom surface are maintained at T 1 and T2, obtain an expression of temperature T(x). What is the rate of heat transfer across the
cone if it is constructed with aluminium (Al) of x 1 = 0.075 m, T1 =100°C, x2 = 0.225 m and T2 =20°C. k = 237 W/m K for pure
aluminium. [188.46 W]
