Integrating Technology – Task 1
Part A: Classroom Technology
1. The ethical challenge that could potentially arise within a classroom
when integrating technology is data privacy, which demands our utmost attention and responsible use. Educators, as the custodians of a vast amount of students’ data, utilize it when creating a personalized learning experience, creating cause for oversight and data leak issues. (Maya, 2023)
2. A key strategy to overcome this challenge is to empower students
through teaching responsible engagement with technology. This includes understanding the importance of safety and the potential impact of their positive and negative actions. Establishing policies and practices that ensure sensitive data is secure and used only for education is crucial. By taking these proactive steps, teachers play a pivotal role in guiding students in the ethical use of technology. This approach fosters digital literacy and awareness among students, educating them about the potential risks and ethical considerations associated with digital tools. Prioritizing the welfare and privacy of students with established guidelines is crucial in this digital era.
Part B: Technology, Topic, and Use
1. Mathematics will forever be essential. It is not just about the
fundamentals of addition/subtraction and multiplication/division in early childhood. Hidden within those math fundamentals are building blocks that improve memory and problem-solving skills and regulate emotions by boosting emotional health. This is why using platforms like Khan Academy, which offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard, is crucial in our education system.
2. Students can leverage the benefits of Khan Academy to enhance their
basic math skills. This platform offers many resources, including practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard. It encourages and empowers students to study independently, providing a customized learning experience. Students can track their progress alongside self-paced practice and receive directions, feedback, and guidance. This comprehensive approach fosters engagement and training, leading to high levels of success. Moreover, it provides a detailed report on each student's progress, enhancing the learning experience. The effectiveness of Khan Academy in improving math skills is a testament to its value in our education system (Dickson, 2023). Educational Technology - D092
3. To assist students with questions or technical difficulties, teachers
must thoroughly understand the instructional source before letting students start. Before student engagement, educators will create their accounts and learn the ins and outs of the source, like where to add instruction videos, quizzes, games, and lessons. Using the smartboard for visual clarification and guidance, students will log in on their Chromebooks and create an account with Khanacademy.org. Together, we will walk through how to navigate the program. Having them initiate the startup as a class ensures overall access. Starting a lesson with the class will show them navigation tools and help them understand where to find homework assignments or tasks due. I would set it up so that whenever students log into math, they are prompted to do a timed addition/subtraction or multiplication/division warm-up. This will be a 1 X 1 digit problem until they become proficient enough to start 2 X 2 digit problems. Different methods, such as manipulatives, drawing, skip counting, and drill and practice, will also be integrated. I believe that the repetitiveness of doing quick math lets your brain learn patterns and placement that eventually embed into your memory and become quick knowledge references.
4. Regarding diverse learner capabilities, Khan Academy ensures that
they keep their site up to date with the most popular technologies while utilizing personal reviews and findings. Navigate to “Settings” and click “Accessibility,” from there, you can adjust the settings to your needs. For the advanced learners, students will work through their grade level courses first and then move up to the next level (algebra, trig, etc.) within the Math topic (Dickson, 2023).
C. Assessing Students
1. To assess my student's math learning and abilities, I will use I-Ready.
2. I-Ready provides personalized learning with adaptive math support. It
becomes familiar with the student's skill set and progress and comprehensively addresses their math and literacy skills. Grades K–8 students who use i-Ready show more significant improvements in math and reading than those who do not. Reports provide actionable data, enabling teachers to decide on the next steps for students (I-Ready, 2023).
3. Students can become independent I-Ready learners by building on
their prior knowledge. This, in turn, motivates the learner to take responsibility for their learning, which can drive improved education and increased understanding. With individualized plans, students learn to focus on their interests, ask questions, and develop independent ideas free from peer and teacher influences.
