APPLICATIONS OF MATHEMATICAL FUNCTIONS IN MECHANICAL AND

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Mathematics in engineering is changing. Traditionally, mathematics was a tool to formulate

problems precisely and solve them.

Now it is becoming an integral part of it and new methods of solving engineering problems
are being created. In engineering, the use of modeling is frequent, which requires the
creation of new mathematical structures.

Algebra is essential for solving any problem, and you use it throughout your entire career.

Trigonometry is essential for those who want to study civil, mechanical and electrical
engineering.

Geometry is a basic subject for civil and mechanical engineers.

Analytical geometry is an essential subject for civil engineering and electrical engineering
courses. The rest of the courses use it, but on a smaller scale.

The same thing happens with the subject of mathematical functions, which are in different
areas. In this case, as in mechanical electrical engineering, the function is given in such a
way that f(x)=ax+b

 The logarithmic function is used in mechanical engineering to graph the strength,

plasticity, elongation, stress and percentage of carbon in metals, thus better
understanding their behavior.

 The quadratic function is widely used in civil engineering, as it facilitates the

measurement of bridges or structures, taking as a reference point and applying the
equation. It is also used to determine parabolas and describe trajectories.

 The trigonometric function is used in the study of periodic phenomena, to

calculate the flow of alternating current, and also in the design of plans, structures,
and it plays an important role in the study of sound wave frequencies.

Examples of functions:

 The profits obtained from the manufacture of a piece machined by the

manufacturer have a cost of 20 soles for the material used in each piece plus 30
soles for labor in said process.

f ( x )=20 ( x ) +3 0

f ( x )=20 ( 300 )+ 3 0

f ( x )=6030
A function in electronics is represented by the value of the power loss when the voltage
varies from 0.1 to 1.2 and a direct current is applied at the given values.

Pf =If . Uf

The applications given to functions in electronics are like capacitors, the oscilloscope,
where you can see how the electric current behaves.
Finally, we can say that the functions, whether algebraic, transcendental or defined by
sections, it is very important to have the knowledge to solve them and thus be able to
apply them in various problems of mechanical electrical engineering.
