Assignment - 2 (P&S)

Questions:

1. A sample space is defined by S = {1, 2 ≤ s ≤ 3, 4, 5}. A random variable is defined by:

X = 2 for 0 ≤ s ≤ 2.5, X = 3 for 2.5 ≤ s ≤ 3.5, and X = 5 for 3.5 ≤ s ≤ 6.
(a) Is X discrete, continuous, or mixed?
(b) Give a set that defines the values X can have.

2. If a random variable X has the density function

(
1
−2 < x < 2
fX (x) = 4
0 elsewhere

Obtain (a) P (X < 1), (b) P (|X| > 1) (c) P (2X + 3 > 5).

3. Determine the real constant α for arbitrary real constants m and 0 < b, such that

fX (x) = αe−|x−m|/b

is a valid density function.

4. A continuous random variable X has a p.d.f given by

(
kxe−λx x > 0, λ > 0
fX (x) =
0 otherwise

Determine the constant k, and obtain the mean and variance of X.

5. A random variable X is Gaussian with mean ax = 0 and standard deviation σx = 1.

(a) What is the probability that |X| > 2?
(b) What is the probability that X > 2?

6. If the probability of success in a single trial is 0.25. Then what is the probability that at
least one success in 100 trials? Approximate the same using the normal distribution.

7. The time required to complete Quiz II is normally distributed with an average time of 50min
with a standard deviation of 5 min. Find the number of students who take more than 60
min for the quiz out of 180 students. (Hint: ϕ(2) = 0.9772, ϕ(1) = 8413, ϕ(1.5) = 0.9332 )

8. Find the mean and standard deviation of a continuous random variable X whose pdf is
fX (x) = 3+2x
k for 2 ≤ x ≤ 4, and 0 otherwise.

9. Most graduate schools of business require applicants for admission to take the Graduate
Management Admission Council’s GMAT examination. Scores on the GMAT are roughly
normally distributed with a mean of 527 and a standard deviation of 112. What is the
probability of an individual scoring above 500 on the GMAT? How high must an individual
score on the GMAT in order to score in the highest 5%?

moments about origin. Also find the mean and variance.

11. In the P&S examination taken by 182 students, the mean and standard deviation of marks
found to be 45% and 10%, respectively. If the marks saved are normally distributed, find
how many will pass if the minimum pass marks are 33%. Also find the number of students
who can get A+ if the range for A+ is 93% to 100%.

12. Find the mean and variance of the following random variables.

• Binomial
• Poisson
• Normal
• Uniform continuous on [a, b]
