HW 2

The document outlines a homework assignment for a Communication Systems course, consisting of six problems related to message and carrier signals, including tasks such as sketching spectra, determining energy and bandwidth, and retrieving message signals from filtered outputs. It covers concepts like DSB-SC signals, low pass filtering, and amplitude modulation with specific parameters. The problems require analytical skills in signal processing and understanding of frequency domain representations.

Communication Systems (EE304L / EE211L)

Homework 2
1) Consider a message signal m(t) = sinc(2000t) and a carrier signal c(t) = cos(2πfc t), where the
carrier frequency (fc ) is 100 times the bandwidth of m(t).
a) Sketch the spectrum of DSB-SC signal r(t) = 10m(t) cos(2πfc t).
b) Determine the energy and bandwidth of the signal r(t).

2) A message signal m(t) is multiplied by a carrier signal c(t) = 2 cos(30000πt) to generate a signal
r(t) = m(t)c(t). The spectrum of the message signal (M (f )) is shown in Fig. 1. The signal r(t)
is passed through a low pass filter (LPF) of cut-off frequency fc = 15 KHz. If v(t) denotes the
output of the LPF, suggest a method to retrieve the message signal m(t) from v(t).

3) For each of the baseband signals: (i) m(t) = cos(1000πt) (ii) m(t) = 2 cos(1000πt)+sin(2000πt)
(iii) m(t) = cos(1000πt) cos(3000πt), do the following:
a) Sketch the spectrum of m(t).
b) Sketch the spectrum of the DSB-SC signal r(t) = m(t) cos(10, 000πt).
c) Identify the upper sideband (USB) and the lower sideband (LSB) spectra.
d) Identify the frequencies in the baseband, and the corresponding frequencies in the DSB-SC,
USB, and LSB spectra.

4) Consider a carrier signal c(t) = a cos(2πfc t) and a message signal m(t) with Fourier transform
|f | 4 4

M (f ) = (1 − 10 4 ) u(f + 10 ) − u(f − 10 ) . The signal of the form x(t) = m(t) + c(t) is passed

through a system whose input (x(t)) and output (y(t)) relationship is given by y(t) = bx2 (t)+x(t).

The output of the system is then passed through a band pass filter (BPF) to obtain an AM signal.
Determine the cut-off frequency of the BPF in order to generate an AM signal corresponding to
the message signal m(t) and the carrier signal c(t), provided fc = 900KHz. Draw the spectrum
of the obtained AM signal.

5) A signal x(t) = 4 cos(1000πt)cos(2πfc t) is multiplied with cos(2π(fc + 40)t), ( fc =1MHz) and

then passed through a low pass filter with cut-off frequency 510 Hz, as shown in Fig. 2. Find the
output y(t).

6) A message m(t) = 4 sin(60πt) is amplitude modulated using a carrier signal c(t) = Ac cos(2πfc t),
where fc = 10KHz.

a) Sketch the magnitude spectrum of m(t) and c(t).

b) For a modulation index of 0.5, write the time domain expression of the AM signal.
c) Determine the power efficiency of the AM signal.
d) Sketch the magnitude spectrum of the AM signal.
