MC Mid1 R16

The document presents a series of technical problems related to cellular network design and performance, covering topics such as cell geometry, channel allocation, user capacity, receiver sensitivity, and propagation issues. Each problem requires calculations based on given parameters, such as area, bandwidth, and traffic load, to determine various metrics like the number of cells, available channels, and coverage probability. The problems also involve applying formulas related to Erlang B and C systems, diffraction loss, and path loss in different scenarios.

Answer any Four. Each carry 10 marks.

1. A city has an area of 50 km2 and assuming hexagonal geometry for cells with radius (R) 0.5km, a

base station is installed at the centre of each Hexagon (Area of a hexagon = 3

√3 R 2). Given that
2
the system bandwidth is 40 MHz. channel bandwidth is 200kHz, and cluster size is 3.
a. Find the number of cells in the service area [2M]
b. Find the number of carriers per cell [1M]
c. If each carrier can be shared amongst 8 users, find the number of available channels per cell
[2M]
d. For GoS of 1%, Erlangs B system, find the number of users can be served by each cell if each
user traffic load is 0.1 E. [6M]
e. Find the total number of users supported by the system over the service area. [1M]

(From Erlangs B formula for C=66 and GoS = 1%, A= 46E and for C= 30 and GoS=1%, A= 30E)

2. A hexagonal cell within a 4-cell system has a radius of 1.387 km. A total of 60 channels are used
within the entire system. If the load per user is 0.029 Erlangs, and λ= 1 call/hour, compute the
following for an Erlang C system that has a 5% probability of a delayed call:
a. How many users per square kilometer will this system support? [2M]
b. What is the probability (Prob(delay>10/delay>0) that a delayed call will have to wait more
than 10 seconds? [5M]
c. What is the probability (Prob(delay>10)) that a call will be delayed for more than 10
seconds? [3M]

(From Erlangs C chart for C=20 and Prob(delay>0) = 5%, A= 15 E and for C=15 and Prob(delay>0) =
5%, A= 9 E)

3. Find the receiver sensitivity level (in dBm) for the following receiver for required output SNR of
18 dB

Consider Bandwidth as 200 kHz. (k= 1.38x10-23 J/K) [10M]

4. Consider the obstruction as a Knife-edge and medium as free space in the following scenario.
Given that Pt = 20W, both the transmitting and receiving antennas are isotropic, and fc=1GHz.
Compute the following
a. Find the received power in the absence of obstruction. [2M]
b. Find the Diffraction parameter. [4M]
c. Find the received power in the presence of the obstruction [4M}

(Diffraction loss in dB G D=20 log 10 ( 0.225

v )
, v>2.4)
5. Boundary Coverage Problem: Given that receiver sensitivity -102 dBm, EIRP of 1kW and cell
radius 1km; the path loss exponent is 4, shadowing deviation 8 dB, and carrier frequency 1GHz.
The reference power can be found at one-meter distance from transmitting antenna assuming
free space. (Q(2.1) =0.0179, Q(1.2) = 0.1151). Compute the following
a. Find the reference power at a reference distance of 1m. [2M]
b. Find the median received power on cell boundary. [2M]
c. Find the boundary Coverage Probability. [6M]

6. Indoor Propagation problem: Consider the following scenario. Given that Pt=20 dBm, fc=2.4
GHz, and WAF =6dB. The open area is characterized with pathloss exponent of 3.7. Compute the
following.
a. Find the received power at a Line-of-Sight distance of 10m into open area from the wall
[4M]
b. If the receiver sensitivity level is -85 dBm, find the range of the transmitter into the open
area from the wall. [6M]

7. Find the required margins for Rayleigh flat fading and Log-normal shadowing to maintain the
coverage for 99% of the time. Assume the shadowing deviation is to be 6 dB. [5M+5M]
(Q-1(0.1)=1.28)
8. If the pathloss exponent is 4 and cluster size is 7, find the signal to interference ratio(SIR) at cell
boundary. And find reuse distance for cell radius 1km. [5M]
The SIR of 15 dB is observed in a cellular system when omnidirectional antennas are used. What
will be the SIR when directional antennas with 1200 sectoring and 600 sectoring is used? [5M]
