Module 3

The document outlines Module 1 of a Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics course, focusing on buoyancy and Archimedes' Principle. It explains the concepts of buoyant force and provides formulas for calculating submerged volumes for floating bodies. Additionally, it includes examples to illustrate the application of these principles in various scenarios.

Archimedes Principle

- Any body immersed in a fluid is subjected to an upward force called buoyant force equal to
the weight of the displaced fluid

Buoyancy
For Floating Bodies:

1. For homogeneous body of volume “V” "floating" in a homogeneous liquid at rest, the volume
displaced is

2. For homogeneous body of height “H” "floating" in a homogeneous liquid at rest, and constant
cross-sectional area parallel to the liquid surface, the submerged length D is

Examples
1. A block of wood 0.2 m thick is floating in sea water. The specific gravity of wood is 0.65 while
that of sea water is 1.03. Find the minimum area of the block to support a man weighing 80 kg.

2. A stone weighs 460 N in air. When submerged in water, it weighs 300 N. Find the volume and
specific weight of the stone

3. A body having a specific gravity of 0.7 floats on a liquid with SG = 0.8. What percentage of the
body is floating above the liquid surface?

4. A uniform block of steel SG = 7.85 will float in a mercury-water interface. What is the ratio of the
body submerged in mercury and in water?
