Science, Technology,

Lesson 4 and Nation-building

Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
● discuss the role of Science and Technology in Philippine
nation building;
● evaluate government policies pertaining to science and
technology in terms of their contributions to nation building;
● identify actual science and Education in the Philippines and
selected indigenous science and technologies.
● Time Frame: 3 hours

Introduction:

Hello! Today, you are going to learn the development of science and technology
in the Philippines through different colonial periods. Many significant inventions and
discoveries have been accomplished by or attributed to Filipinos. This lesson tackles
how the development of science and technology affects the development of the
Philippines as a nation. Are you ready? So now, let’s begin!

Activity: Picture Analysis

Analysis
1. What have you observed in the picture?

2. How do these people improve their daily living?

3. In your observation of the picture, how did they come up with such development?

Abstraction

PRE-SPANISH ERA

o Filipinos were aware of the medicinal and therapeutic

properties of plants

o Had an alphabet, number system, a weighing and

measuring system and a calendar

o Filipinos were engaged in farming, shipbuilding, mining

and weaving

o Banaue Rice Terraces – sophisticated product of

engineering by pre-Spanish era Filipinos

SPANISH COLONIAL ERA

o The Spanish introduced formal education and founded

scientific institution
o Established parish schools where religion, reading, writing,
arithmetic and music was taught
o Sanitation and more advanced methods of agriculture
was taught to the natives
o Established colleges and universities – University of Santo
Tomas, the oldest existing university in Asia
o When the Spaniards came to
the Philippines, our ancestors were
already trading with China, Japan,
Siam, India, Cambodia, Borneo and
the Moluccas. The Spanish
government continued trade relations
with these countries, and the Manila
became the center of commerce in the
East. The Spaniards closed the ports
of Manila to all countries except
Mexico. Thus, the Manila–Acapulco
Trade, better known as the "Galleon
Trade" was born.

AMERICAN PERIOD

o The Americans are more influential in the expansion of Science & Technology in the Philippines.
They founded a public education system and established the first modern research university
patterned from their own higher education system, the UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
o The progress of science and technology in the Philippines continued under American rule of the
islands.

o On July 1, 1901- The Philippine Commission established the Bureau of Government

Laboratories which was placed under the Department of Interior. The Bureau replaced the
Laboratorio Municipal, which was established under the Spanish colonial era. The Bureau dealt
with the study of tropical diseases such as malaria and cholera, and
laboratory projects.
o On October 26, 1905, the Bureau of Government Laboratories
was replaced by the Bureau of Science and
o On December 8, 1933, the National Research Council of the
Philippines was established.
o The Bureau of Science became the primary research center of the
Philippines until World War II.

SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

o Science education focuses on teaching, learning, and understanding science

o Teaching science involves exploring pedagogical theories and models in helping teachers teach
scientific concepts and process effectively
o Learning science includes both pedagogy and the most interesting aspect, which is helping students
understand and love science
o Understanding science implies developing and applying science-process skills

1. Science in the University of the Philippines

o Remains as top university in the country in terms of Science degree programs (undergraduate-
graduate level)
o Has the largest concentration of scientists and doctoral degree holders in the field of Science
o Agricultural scientists at UP LB – advancing agricultural research & development in the Philippines
o UP Visayas – research in Marine Science
o The National Science Complex in UP Diliman – core of S & T activities in the Philippines

2. DOST-funded Scholarship
o Provides scholarship to deserving Filipino students
o Aims to increase the human talents for science and technology in the country.

3. Science Education in Basic Education

A. Philippine Science High School System
o Government program for scientifically and mathematically gifted Filipino students
B. Regional Science High School
o Offers a curriculum focusing on science and mathematics

INDIGENOUS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE

PHILIPPINES

1. Prediction of Weather

o Powek ni killing (Storm of the Killing)- A brightly shining moon with a rainbow encircling or a bloody red
sunset it may indicate a coming storm.

o Kasili (Mystical fish)- when a mythical fish (kasili) under the earth wants to surface, a typhoon will happen.
