Lab # 02: Introduction to NI Multisim
Learning Objectives:
1. Introduction to NI Multisim software.
2. Draw simple and complex resistive circuits on software.
Equipment Required:
1. Digital Multimeter (DMM)
2. Breadboard
3. DC Power Supply
4. 10 Resistors of different values
5. Connecting Wires
6. Software (Multisim)
Introduction:
Multisim:
Multisim is the schematic capture and simulation application of National Instruments Circuit Design Suite, a suite of EDA
(Electronic Design Automation) tools. It is similar to PSpice, but it is easier to use in practical sense and has lots of features to
make circuit drawing/simulating, a really simple task. Here is window of multisim, as it appears first time when you start the
software.

1. The Menu Bar is where you find commands for all functions.
2. The Design Toolbox lets you navigate through the different types of files in a project (schematics, PCBs, reports),
view a schematic’s hierarchy and show or hide different layers.
3. The Component toolbar contains buttons that let you select components from the Multisim databases for placement in
your schematic.
4. The Standard toolbar contains buttons for commonly-performed functions such as Save, Print, Cut,and Paste.
5. The View toolbar contains buttons for modifying the way the screen is displayed.

6. The Simulation toolbar contains buttons for starting, stopping, and other simulation functions.
8. The In Use List contains a list of all components used in the design.
A blank schematic Circuit 1 is automatically created. To create a new schematic, click on File – New – Schematic Capture. To save the schematic
click on File /Save As. To open an existing file click on File/ Open in the toolbar.

Component Toolbar
To Place Components click on Place/Components. On the Select Component Window click on Group to select the
components needed for the circuit. Click OK to place the component on the schematic.
Once we Click on Component, new window will appear as shown below.Where we have Master database. We have Access of all
groups through which we can choose specific Group to perform required task.

Inductor etc…
We will use these components to build the required circuit. As we choose required family then we have option of required
component value, which we will choose according to our need. For example to select click on Place/Components. In Group select
Basic scroll down to Resistors and select the value of the resistor needed to construct the circuit, for this example select 1k.

Insturment Toolbar
Multisim offers multiple ways to analyze the circuit using virtual instruments. Some of the basic instruments needed for this lab are
described below
Multimeter
Use the Multimeter to measure AC or DC voltage or current, and resistance or decibel loss between two nodes in a circuit. To use
the Multimeter click on the Multimeter button in the Instruments toolbar and click to place its icon on the workspace. Double-
click on the icon to open the instrument face, which isused to enter settings and view measurements.

Simulation
To simulate the completed circuit, Click on Simulate/Run or F5. This feature can also be accessed from the toolbar.
Task:
1. Select 10 resistors having different values in circuit window.
2. Rotate 5 resistors vertically.
3. Change the value of any one resistor as per your Student ID Number. Select Multimeter and measure its value.
4. Connect DC Power supply of 5V to Single resistor having value as per your Student ID Number. Also connect
Ground to complete the circuit and measure Voltage and Current.
5. Connect DC Power supply of 5V to two resistors of different values in series. Also connect
Ground to complete the circuit and measure Voltage and Current.
6. Connect DC Power supply of 5V to two resistors of different values in Parallel. Also connect Ground to
complete the circuit and measure Voltage and Current.
