4.2 Activity I. Lesson Proper

(20 mins)
Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which autotrophic organisms use light energy to make sugar and
oxygen gas from carbon dioxide and water.
The following are the steps involved in the photosynthesis process:

1. Plants take up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through the tiny pores known as 'stomata
present on the leaves' surface and surrounded by 'guard cells'.
2. Plants absorb the water and minerals from the soil with deep penetrated roots inside
the ground and transport them through vessels to the other parts of the plants, including
the leaves, where the synthesis of food takes place.
3. The green pigment present in the leaves known as chlorophyll helps the plant's leaves
capture the sunlight that acts as the source of energy to carry out the process.
4. Through the process of photosynthesis, oxygen is released into the atmosphere during the
synthesis of food.
5. At the end of the photosynthesis, the produced energy is stored in the form of starch.

The photosynthesis process is defined in the chemical equation below. When carbon
dioxide, water, and sunlight combine with the aid of chlorophyll, glucose and oxygen are formed.
The nutrient obtained by the plant is glucose, and oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

• Carbon dioxide + Water + Light energy → Glucose + Oxygen

• 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2

IMPORTANCE

Photosynthesis is super important for life on Earth for several reasons:

1. Provides Food and Energy: Plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their
own food (sugars) through photosynthesis. This food is the base of the food chain, providing
energy for animals, including humans.
2. Produces Oxygen: A byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen, which is essential for most
living things to breathe. Without photosynthesis, there wouldn't be enough oxygen in the air
for us to survive.
3. Removes Carbon Dioxide: Photosynthesis helps remove carbon dioxide from the air, which
is important because too much carbon dioxide can contribute to climate change.
4. Basis of Fossil Fuels: The energy stored in fossil fuels (like coal and oil) originally came
from ancient plants that used photosynthesis.
5. Supports Ecosystems: Photosynthesis is the foundation of most ecosystems. It provides food
and shelter for animals and helps maintain the balance of gases in the atmosphere.

In short, photosynthesis is like the engine that drives life on Earth. It provides the energy and oxygen
that we need to survive, and it helps keep our planet healthy.

A. Activity
The teacher will group the students into 5. (The groups will remain throughout the lesson)
Create a diagram showcasing the process of photosynthesis. Write it on a short bond paper.
(Only the key steps)

4.3 Analysis After the students had finalize their diagram. The teacher will choose a representative to discuss
shortly the process of Light-dependent and light independent reaction.

Accuracy: Does the diagram accurately represent all the major
components and processes in photosynthesis?
Clarity: Is the diagram visually clear and easy to understand?
Are the labels legible and informative?
Completeness: Does the diagram include all the key steps of
Photosynthesis?
Conciseness: Is the diagram focused and not overly cluttered?
Does it convey the essential information without unnecessary
details?

and confidently? Do they demonstrate a good understanding of
the concepts involved in photosynthesis?
4.4 Summarize key points:
Abstraction
(5 mins)
 Process: Converts light energy to chemical energy (glucose) in plants.
 Location: Occurs in chloroplasts within plant cells.
 Two Stages:

1. Light-dependent reactions: In thylakoid membranes, light energy absorbed, water split

(releasing oxygen), ATP and NADPH produced.
2. Light-independent reactions (Calvin Cycle): In stroma, CO2 used with ATP and NADPH
to create glucose.

 Reactants: Water, carbon dioxide, light energy.

 Products: Glucose (sugar), oxygen.
 Importance: Provides energy and oxygen for most life on Earth.

4.5
Application
A. Create a model
(5 mins)
Students will create a scale model using any materials of photosynthesis. They will demonstrate their
understanding of photosynthesis by explaining the process using their model. The scale model
should display the key steps and the important components of photosynthesis.
