Microsoft Excel Functions

This article was very helpful in providing insight into the various functions that can be

used in data analysis using Microsoft Excel. The following 12 functions have particularly proven

to be interesting due to their applicability in day-to-day use for a student like me.

1. MAX Returns the maximum value in a list of arguments

This function comes in handy when analyzing statistical data and there is

the need to identify largest number in order to sort out the figures in an

argument.

2. MIN Returns the minimum value in a list of arguments

This serves the same purpose as function number one, only it gives the

least value on an argument or data set.

3. MODE Returns the most common value in a data set

4. PERCENTILEReturns the k-th percentile of values in a range

5. RANK Returns the rank of a number in a list of numbers

6. STDEV Estimates standard deviation based on a sample

7. VARP Calculates variance based on the entire population

9. SLOPE Returns the slope of the linear regression line

10. NORMDIST Returns the normal cumulative distribution

Used when analyzing statistical data

11. LOGINV Returns the inverse of the lognormal distribution

Used when analyzing logarithmic formulas

12. COUNT Counts how many numbers are in the list of arguments

The 12 highlighted functions above are mainly statistical functions that are used in

primary data analysis and enhance secondary data analysis, and helps obtain desired data from

which inferences can be made to help in decision making.
