Assignment Horizontal alignment.pdf

The document outlines an assignment for a Highway Engineering course at Delta University, focusing on horizontal alignment. It includes seven questions that require calculations and design considerations related to horizontal curves, super elevation, sight distances, and curve elements for various highway scenarios. The assignment aims to assess students' understanding of highway design principles and their application in real-world situations.

Delta University for Science &

Technology Course Title: Highway Engineering 1

Faculty of Engineering Assignment : Horizontal alignment

Civil Engineering Department

Answer the following questions:

Question No.1: Given the following data for a simple horizontal curve, compute all curve elements
and the stations of P.C and P.T
• Station of P.I = 1+500
• External angle of deflection = 18o
• Degree of Curve = 3o 30’

Question No.2: A horizontal curve on a 2-lane highway (24 ft wide) has a super elevation of 6%. The
design speed is 60 mph. Determine the setback of a building corner required for satisfying safe stopping
sight distances, (fs=0.12).

Question No.3: A horizontal curve with a radius of 800 ft connects the tangents of a four-lane highway
that has a posted speed limit of 35 mi/h. If the highway curve is not super elevated, e =0, determine the
horizontal sightline offset (HSO) that a large billboard can be placed from the centerline of the inside
lane of the curve, without reducing the required SSD. Perception-reaction time is 2.5 sec, and f = 0.35,
lane width 12 ft.

Question No.4: A corner of building is situated adjacent to horizontal curve (R = 25 m) 3.5 m from
the edge of the horizontal (lane width= 2.4 m). Determine if the SSD is provided for the curve. Assume
design speed of 30 km/hr.

Question No.5: A 2-lane-2-way highway (7.2m wide, cross crown slope = 2%) is turning right with

a simple curve. The design speed is 100 km/h and the curve degree is 4o13’ and a deflection angle of
24°. A) Rotate the pavement about its C.L. and draw the progress of the pavement edges. B) Calculate
the length of tangent run out and tangent runoff.

Question No.6: A 2- lane highway follows a horizontal curve, it was necessary to avoid corner of
existing building using the safe stopping sight distance. a) What is the max. design speed? Degree of
curve =8 ◦, distance from the centerline of pavement to the corner of building = 26 ft, lane width is 12
ft , shoulder width = 6 ft, the side friction coefficient = 0.35. b) To increase speed up to 60 mph, what
you can do? Knowing that the topography does not allow for increasing the radius.

Question No.7 You are asked to design a horizontal curve with a 40-degree central angle for a two-
lane road with 10-ft lanes. The design speed is 65 mi/h and super elevation is limited to 0.06 ft/ft. Give
the radius, degree of curvature, and length of curve that you would recommend.

Good Luck
