1. This paper has SIX (6) questions. Candidates may then attempt ANY FOUR(4)

2. Full credit will only be given when necessary working is shown.

3. Use of Calculators is NOT allowed in this Examination.

Each one of the questions carries 25 marks. The number of marks allocated for each part-
question is shown in brackets.

1. (a) Express −2𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 1 in the form 𝑎(𝑥 + 𝑝)2 + 𝑞. By first clearly stating
the coordinates of the minimum point and intercepts, sketch the curve
𝑦 = −2𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 1.
(b) (i) Show that the equation

can be written as a quadratic equation in x.
Hence solve the equation

the equation 𝑥 2 + 𝑝𝑥 + 𝑞 + 𝑟 = 0 has equal roots.
(d) It is given that (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵)′ = 𝐴′ ∪ 𝐵′. Showing all necessary details, prove that

is divided by (𝑥 − 2) the remainder is 12.
(i) Find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏.
(ii) When 𝑎 and 𝑏 have these values, find the quadratic factor of 𝑝(𝑥).
