MS Word Exercise: Using Insert Functions, Complex Tables, and Design/Layout Tabs

Objective:

This exercise will help you practice using MS Word’s Insert functions, creating and modifying a
complex table, and applying formatting using the Design and Layout tabs.

Instructions:

Task 1: Insert a Cover Page and Shapes

1. Open Microsoft Word and create a new document.

2. Click on the Insert tab and choose Cover Page. Select any cover page of your choice.

3. Below the cover page, press Enter to create a new section.

4. Go to Insert → Shapes and insert the following:

o A Rectangle (resize it to a banner-like shape at the top of the page).

o A Text Box inside the rectangle, then type: "MS Word Formatting Exercise".

o A Star shape at the bottom of the page (resize as needed).

Task 2: Insert a Complex Table

1. Place the cursor in a new section of the document.

2. Click on Insert → Table → Insert Table.

3. Create a 5x6 table (5 columns, 6 rows).

4. Enter the following column headings:

o Employee Name

o Department

o Position

o Salary

o Date of Joining

5. Fill in the first three rows with fictional data.

6. Merge the first row across all columns and type "Employee Information" (center it and make
it bold).

7. Adjust the column width to fit content using the Layout tab.

Task 3: Format the Table using the Design Tab

1. Click anywhere inside the table, then select the Table Design tab.

2. Apply a Table Style (choose any design from the style gallery).

3. Change the Shading of the header row to a different color.

4. Add Borders to all cells and change the border thickness to 1.5 pt.
5. Use the Text Effects to bold the column headings.

Task 4: Modify the Table Layout

1. Click inside the table and go to the Layout Tab.

2. Adjust the row height to 0.7 inches.

3. Center-align the text in all cells vertically and horizontally.

4. Use Split Cells to divide the last column (Date of Joining) into two sub-columns: "Month" and
"Year".

5. Use Distribute Rows and Columns to make the table evenly spaced.

Task 5: Insert an Image and Footer

1. Click below the table and go to Insert → Pictures. Insert any image (e.g., a company logo).

2. Resize the image and align it to the left.

3. Go to Insert → Footer and choose a footer style.

4. Type "Word Exercise - [Your Name]" inside the footer.

5. Save the document as "MS Word Table Exercise.docx".
