Calculates the Quartile of Grouped
and Ungrouped Data

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS 10
Name: Date:
Teacher: Score:

Measures of Position - Calculates measure of position for Quartile of

grouped and ungrouped data

I. Learning Competency:

Calculates a specified measure of position for a set of data. (M10SP-IVb-1)

Learning Objective: The learner will be able to calculate quartile for grouped and
ungrouped data.

II. Background Information for Learners

This activity focuses on illustrating Quartiles for ungrouped and grouped data.
The Quartile for Ungrouped Data

Quartiles are the points that divide a distribution into four equal parts.
Twenty-five percent (25%) of the distribution is below the first quartile,
fifty percent (50%) is below the second quartile, and seventy-five percent
(75%) is below the third quartile. Q1 is called the lower quartile and (Q3)
is the upper quartile. Q1 <Q2 <Q3, where Q2 is only the median.

25% 25% 25% 25%

Lower Upper
Q1(25%) Q2 (50%) Q3 (75%)

Example
7 students from grade 9 Acumen obtained the following scores in their mathematics quiz.
7, 4, 3, 6, 7, 4, 8
Find the Lower quartile (Q1), Middle quartile (Q2), and the Upper quartile(Q3), of the scores
of 7 students in a mathematics quiz.
First, arrange the scores in ascending order, the data are
3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 7, 8

Next step.
1
To find the 1st quartile, use the formula Qk = 4 (n + 1).

2
1
Position of Q1 = 4 (n + 1)
1
= 4 (7 + 1) Substitute the given.
1
=4 (8) multiply
=2
2nd

3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 7, 8

Therefore, the 1st quartile of the data is the 2nd data element, so Q1 = 4.
1
To find the 2nd quartile, use the formula Qk = 2 (n + 1).
1
Position of Q2 = 2 (n + 1)
1
= 2 (7 + 1) Substitute the given.
1
=2 (8) multiply
th
4 =4

3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 7, 8

Therefore, the 2nd quartile of the data is the 4th data element, so Q2 = 6.
3
To find the 3rd quartile, use the formula Qk = 4 (n + 1).
3
Position of Q3 = 4 (n + 1)
3
= 4 (7 + 1) Substitute the given.
3
=4 (8) multiply
=6
6th

3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 7, 8

Therefore, the 3rd quartile of the data is the 6th data element, so Q3 = 7.

The Quartile for Grouped Data

Recall that quartiles divide the distribution into four equal parts. The steps
to calculate the median are the same as for Q1 and Q3. To find the median
you must first determine the median class. Likewise, before calculating the values of Q1
𝑁
and Q3, the classes Q1 and Q3 must be determined. Class Q1 is the class interval scored ( 4 ) and
3𝑁
the interval scored ( 4 ) is class Q3.

3
Where:
𝐾𝑁
−𝑐𝑓𝑏 XLB= lower boundary of the Qk class
4
Qk = XLB +( )i N = total frequency
𝑓𝑞1 cfb = Cumulative frequency of the class before the Qk
class
fQ1 = frequency of the Qk class
I = Size of class interval
k = nth quartile, where n= 1,2 and 3

Example 1

The following table shows the daily wages of 40 workers.

Daily Wages (Php) Frequency

426 – 450 3
401 - 425 12
376 – 400 9
351 – 375 8
326 - 350 5
301 - 325 3
N = 40

a. Find Q1, Q2 and Q3.

b. Find the interquartile range.

Solution:

Prepare a cumulative frequency table 1.

GIVEN: Note that the 7th to 16th scores belong to the
Class Interval: 351 – 375 351-375 class range. Therefore, the 10th score
is also within the class range.
XLB = 350.5
N=40 The Q1 class is class interval 351 – 375.

b. Q2 class or Median class: = = = 20

That is, we need to find the class interval in which

GIVEN:
the 20th digit is located.
Class interval: 376 - 400 Scores from 17th to 25th are in the class range 376
XLB = 375.5 - 400. So, the 20th score is also in the class range.

c. Q3 class: = = = 30 That is, we need to find the class interval in
4 4 4
which the 30th digit is located.
GIVEN Please note that grades 26-37 belong to class distances
Class interval: 401 - 425 401-425. Therefore, the score 30th also belongs to the
XLB = 400.5 class distance.
N = 40
Cfb = 25 The Q3 class is class interval 401 - 425.

Q3 = 400.5+(0.416666)25 Multiply (0.416666) to 25.

Q3 = 400.5+ 10.416666 75% of theAdd.

workers earn less than 410.92
pesos. The third quartile 410.92 falls within
Q3 = 410.92 the boundaries of the 401-425 category,
which equals 400.5-425.5.
